Bender Creek Veterans Day Ride 2010

Roadjanitor with his riding partners invited me (and Georgie) for a ride in the Danskin OHV trail system on veterans day. This was a mixed group of ATV's, dirt bikes, and my lone TW. Danskin is east of Boise, Id. in the foothills/some mountains (?). Didn't know if the ride would be a go (for me) as the area had experienced some rain and snow the day before, but it was a go. Left Boise on a sunny, but cold morning only to be in the fog at the trailhead. The fog would later lift and we had a good day after all.

Having said that, this ride ended up being quite a challenge for me. The trails themselves would have been great except for the occasional "snow on the trail" and "30,000" mud puddles which slowed me up. I kept to my own pace and would catch up to the others when they stopped for a break. I only crashed 3 times! 2 minor tip overs leaning towards the upperside of an embankment, and 1 crash, front tire went one way and I in the brush while going through a water obstacle (puddle). Thank goodness the brush was soft, it was like falling into a pile of feather pillows. Roadjanitor and his "roadcrew" as I call them, were a good bunch of guys. I appreciate there patience with my pace, and Allen helping me up when I crashed. He asked me how I was before helping me pickup the TW.

I kept it within my comfort zone most of the time, but I WILL ABSOLUTELY GET A NEW FRONT TIRE! Rear stock did great. I will go to this place again in the future, but it will be at a time when there is no chance of SNOW, and it hasn't rained in a month!

Anyway here are a few preview photo's of my ride followed by my youtube video. This is my first "real" posting of taking video, tho I sucked at the camera placement (which I will correct in the future), you'll get a glimps of what it was like. I had the camera on my chest and it did good when I stood up, but not when I was sitting down. You'll get the "picture".

Oh, one more thing. My shoulders and arms were so sore after the ride because of my "Kung Foo Gripe" I had on the handle bars!

awesome country! you guys with the multimedia presentations continue to impress!
Admiral, I would say you did a fine job, though I certainly would have enjoyed slightly longer video sections as the trails seemed very interesting. Liked all the captions and will want to incorperate that feature into my 'productions'.

Looked like great adventure country but mighty cold in the beginning. Most will find that the stock front tire is not your friend in the mud. Glad you went, for you brought back fun for us all to enjoy. Thanks. Gerry
Looks like an awsome trip! I really like the second picture, it almost looks fake. Thanks for letting the rest of us enjoy your trip...

dalsco, Appreciate the comments. One of my co-workers liked the first picture with the fog/clouds burning off. I think it's ok, but to me looks better if full screen and not what the forum allows. My personal choice was the one you liked. Its hard to make out clearly, but one of the ATV's in the group is riding down the trail in the center of the photo. I know there are ways to "add or remove" objects, I sure wish I would have took this photo without the ATV in it. But hey, maybe most will miss the ATV.

Gerry, I would have loved to provide more trail footage, cause riding on the snow, though challenging and not recommended, had some pretty cool views. The footage which is shown, is the best I got on this day. I agree, there were glimpses of some potentially good footage, but the good stuff was way too short and unfortunately, 99% of my video is of my speedo and gas cap. I edited those out the best I could. I had about 10 more minutes worth of video, but I'm guessing folks won't be to interested in how fast or slow I was going ha ha. I'm going to fix the camera mounting situation next time.

On a different note, and not that anyone cares but... When I knew I was going on this ride with roadjanitor, I looked up all the geocaches in the area and took them along with me on the ride. In the end we were going to fast and/or I didn't want to stop the group because of my own hobbies.

The thing is though, I knew I was in the area of some of the caches I looked up, but wasn't sure of the exact locations. Kind of a hunch feeling. Being around that old boiler really seemed familiar for some reason. When I got home I looked up the caches on the computer, and sure enough, I was so darn close. I'm attaching a photo someone took when they visited the cache. In the distance, and not really that far from the camera, you can see the boiler, which I took pictures of. Next summer I'm going back to this area with the family and gonna take my time.

(Not my photo, but one taken by someone else of the boiler when they visited a cache site, near where we rode on this trip)

(Here is one of the photo's I took of the boiler, see how close I was to the cache!)

Hi Kris! It was great to have you along. Hope we didn't beat you up too bad. I know the snow was a bugger and we moved kinda fast. Our discussions about the Geocacheing caught my interest. I will have to invest in a decent GPS and try that out! I have a disc of pictures at my office for you. Stop by and ask for me, or Larry, and we'll get them to you. I'll try to post a few, but I have to figure out the trick.

Here is a link to mt pictures in Dropbox. Hope this works!

How did Georgie fare, he looks pretty tired in that picture. Thanks for sharing, does look like a rough ride for the TW.

Thanks for taking me along Ken. Despite the occasional stretch of snow, I had a good time on the ride. Taking a hard look at the Kendra tire I've seen on another forum post. Thanks for posting the photo's. I will stop by next week sometime to pickup the disk. It's fun to see me in a photo or two as I'm usually the one who is taking the photo and am not in many. Again, thanks for the ride.

George was very tired at the end of the day and rode well, when I wasn't trying to eject her due to my poor riding! Luckily we are usually going slow enough for her to bail-off when it looks like I'm in a sticky situation! Allen on this ride, and Truelight from a ride in late summer are the only one's which can attest to her riding ability (besides me). Allen said he was very impressed that she can stay on. I plan to mod the rear rack by making a second (railing) level, which should help her stay on in the really tough spots.

Now, if I could only get her to keep the Doggles on! I tried a modified set of goggles, didn't work so much, as expected.
