I just got my 2003 tw200 yesterday and it ran good untill today i was wondering if someone could help here is what is wrong i was rideing and i came to a stop and the bike died so i restarted it and it shut back off so i put it on reserve and it fired right up and got me home so i thought i was just low on gas so when i got home i did not put gas in it i just turned the gas back on and it ran fine i put 2 miles on it and parked it 1hour later i went for another ride and it did the same thing what could this be

It seems this type of issue is very common with the TW. I have the same problem now. Some have stated that they had problems such as this, and that a new CDI box fixed it for them. I have cleaned out the carb, checked the operation of the float bowl, replaced the ignition coil, and replaced the CDI so far. Still having the problem...getting a little sick of dicking around with the dumb thing to be honest. I'll post on the board if (when) I fix the problem. If you could do the same that would be much appreciated. Oh and, by the way, if I were you, I'd be very suspicious that the previous owner may have had knowledge of the problem prior to selling the bike!

Newbie - Was it low on gas or not? Did you check how much was in the tank or not?

The hardest part in trying to help answer a question like that is getting enough information out of you to figure out where to start.

You may just have no gas in the tank.

Sounds to me like when he was riding it home he sloshed enough to the petcock to get it started. Says he didn't put more gas in it, why not if I got home on reserve the first thing I would check is if I had gas in the tank. The CDI box should not be the issue on a bike this new however my dad had a part go bad on his 07 that connects to the spark plug that was a show stopper it is also only three bucks to replace.

You have to proceed stepwise to analyze a problem, start with the simple things first and go down the list in a logical fashion.

You can replace parts shotgun style unless you luckily hit on what the problem may have been, although you will probably never figure it out. Relying on anecdotal stories also never helps.

There is not enough information here to even give any advice, although for starters, I would bet he is out of gas.

I had a similar issue with my bike. It would start, run for a while then die. Or start and have no power. For my issue it ended up being the CDI unit. Good luck.

Yep, the problem might have nothing to do w/ what you did w/ the fuel selector. Fuel and spark checks aren't a bad place to start. When I'm at a loss w/ an unexpected engine shut down, I like to start w/ a clean fuel supply. Drain the tank, if there is contamination remove the tank and thoroughly wash and dry out. Install w/ a new fuel filter. Try it out. Check the carb fuel bowl for contamination, if pretty much clean reinstall, if dirty the carb may need further attention. Next time the bike won't start try a plug check. Pull the plug, reinstall in the socket, ground the plug to the motor and try to start. Although checking an intermittent ign. system is a bit tricky, a good spark during periods of non starting is a pretty good indication that the ign. is okay.



Like others have said, the problem could be anywhere. The above are just some basic fuel and spark checks to get you started. If nothing else, the maintenance will introduce you to your new bike. RR

At the time that the bike died were you doing anything with the clutch lever?

It might not be your problem but while trouble shooting keep in mind that for some reason a TW will die/cutout if the clutch safety switch is defective or if the handle vibrates against it. THIS PROBLEM WILL NEVER BE DISCOVERED WITH TROUBLE SHOOTING VIA THE SERVICE MANUAL. It is a dirty little secret known only by the most experienced Yamaha techs. easy test/fix is to just overide the clutch safety switch.

to me it sounds like he has sediment in the fuel tank that cloged up his petcock, and upon switching it to reserve and driving it it cleared away from the on hose, thats why it worked when he switched it back to on.



i would try draining and cleaning your tank and petcock.
