Hey guys I'm new to the site, I grew up on a 87 TW so I'm not new to the bike, just not shure about break in. I'm picking up a new 2013 TW tomorrow how often should I change the oil at first?and what about RPMs? The dealer says follow what's in the owners manual. I've heard a few different theory's of what's actually best for the motor. I appreciate the help

Change it after the first 100 and then follow the manuals directions. That is the simplest way to do it. Many have their own break in methods but I am one of the few men that actually read the instructions.
Do as you will and enjoy your new bike!

I try and vary my speed a lot for the first 500 miles or so........ When you change your oil always make sure the screens are cleaned good.........All kidding a side.. My dub runs better at 10,000 miles than it did for the first 500.... Have fun and welcome to the site. OMM.

As stated above, change the oil several times before the 1000 mile mark.....at 100 miles, then perhaps 300,600,& 1000?.....one scenario....everyone has their own way. RPM's.....DO NOT putt-putt the engine!....RPM's also dictate oil pressure, don't starve it!. Vary the RPM's,kinda like in-town riding, then go for short back road rides (10 or so miles). It'll be fine!.

I just brought my TW home tonite! The dealer this time said to change the oil at 200 and 600 I think I'll do 100 200 and 600. Thanks again guys

Tim

Congrats! I would do the first change at 25 miles or at the most 50, though. You will be amazed at all the metal. Might as well get it out of there. At least clean the filter at 25 and 50.

The real way to break in a TW is to:

1. Buy a Jimbo Shield.

2. Start putting 5% of your monthly income away.

3. Pick one change that you want to do/upgrade a month.

a. That way you won't break the bank.

b. Your significant other (if applies) won't notice drastic changes.

3. If you are considering certain options, feel free to ask the forum members. They will give you honest opinons, and quite possibly help you prevent from doing something that might be detrimental to your TDub or bad for all of us Tdubbers

4. Don't feel bad about copying member's ideas. It builds their egos

5. If you do an upgrade that hasn't been done, be sure to do step by step pics in case someone else wants to take your idea

and issue you all the credit for the cool idea.

I guess following the motor break in suggestions is par for the course, but more importantly, have fun personalizing your TDub.
