Naturally occurring bear food is sparse here. They are the Top Scavenger but there is little to eat in the high desert sage nor in the sub-alpine pine forests. They scavenge coyote, cougar and bobcat kills as well as winter kills . Thus the bears we have become dependent on humans for food and many are unfortunately put down. Our local elementary school was in lockdown the other day because of bear in playground.
My bear owes the Mrs. a new flowerpot as well as an apology to me for muddying up my freshly washed windows. These windows are very bear smudged.

I'll bet it is hard for the bears to make a living where you describe, the Yukon is similarly hard for most of the wildlife. Hard long winters and a semi-arid environment. The only thing that saves the bears here is that there are very few people. We regularly have bear in the residential areas of Whitehorse.

The bear does look like a friendly patron at the take-out window "Yes, I'ld like the Big Bear Special with extra honey, a large fries, onion rings, and oh yeah six grilled chicken sandwiches to go,hold the pickles".

So what do you do? Have it trapped or shot or maybe...just maybe feed and tame it then spread the word you have a guard bear protecting the homestead.

Bears don't make good pets. They go along to get along, but try to take over the bed and the recliner by the fireplace, and if you tell them "no" they eat you.
