Went off to check this "2003" advertised up the road. She looked more like a babe of the 80s to me. She was in a barn in the corner stable with his wife's horses. She had been used for him to ride with her on outrides of 10-15 km over the last couple of years and he had done around a 1000 km.

She was chained up so she wouldn't wander and covered with a canvas sheet. He bought her from a tractor dealer in town. I remembered the guy and had looked at his bikes before which he did up as a hobby and a sideline, selling them unlicensed to farmers. I took a ride on the bike which kicked easily to life and had the right power.

He said he had not serviced in or topped up the oil in its time with him, but the wife says its too noisy and he should ride a horse or pedal a bicycle.

He is a teacher of classical and other guitar and did not tinker with wrenches since he had to look after hsi finger nails. It turned out once I met his wife that we had met years ago when we both lived at lower altitudes through his wife's brother who was a friend of my brother and had cut his professional teeth under my father to whom he had written to thank before getting wiped out in a tragic car accident. Luckily his daughters survived. So there was no doubt in his honesty to me and we settled on the equivalent of US$600 after I had pointed out her age, the weeping gaskets, fork seal and boots etc, and provided there was no report of her being stolen when I go to get a police clearance for licensing.

Here she is in the shed with the big bad dog who has to have dinner seperately.

She will get a wash on the weekend, so here she is as I found her.

As you can see she's got a home made rack which can be built upon and needs to be attached to the frame rather than just the carrier bracket. While the angle makes it seem so, it doesn't protect the indicators which he broke dropping it here and there and reckons it's too heavy for him to easily pick up.

The speedo and odo both work.

The air filter was clean with oil having run down to the bottom and the open chain and sprocket dry but not worn and missing a protector.

There is a whine from the front that my other T-Dub does not have. Its not the wheel - test rode her on dirt. Maybe bearing or brakes?

The stainless exhaust seems to have a valve and plate set up inside it. There is some carbon on the exhaust and spark plug, but no smoke. I imagine that is because he rode her no faster than 40 km an hour. So will service her and give her a burn and see what happens. I charged the battery (2005) over night. It now lights up the tail light and speedo but no starter or indicator. I will put the other battery in over the weekend and see what happens. Otherwise she is in way better condition body and rust wise than my 95. Any ideas on how to age her exactly? The cam chain is manual adjust unlike my 95 . . .

Paint schemes varied by market. Over the years U.S. versions were different from Aussie and JDM and Euro versions and that continues to be true today. So we Yanks will probably get it wrong. A VIN check is probably the most reliable method. I'm not sure your market is one that has adopted The U.S. or Euro system but if it is the date code is in the 10th position of the serial number. Interesting that yours has a drum brake and a trip meter.

If they haven't, I got nuttin'.

For $600 I'd say you got a darn good deal, no matter what year of TW. After spending so much time in the corner chained up, I think she'll appreciate a good bath and some tender loving care (TLC). Good find, and will look forward to what she becomes.

Thanks Lzrd, will look at the numbers. I guess I's like to know the age just out of classic vintage curiousity. The 80s were good years I tell my kids and they just

Reassuring that you think it good deal Admiral. Now at least it will reduce the T-Dub conflict at home when the wife and kids want to play with my toy - like having two bathrooms it takes the pressure off
Then again a 2001 in mint condition with 1000 km just sold for = $1625 but it was 6 hours north and sold quickly. So two birds in the hand and one in the bush.
But if I was selfish I should have just one mint one for myself. Still, this one was 15 minutes up the road - it was half an hour home since it was dark with thick mist. It is a runner, rather than a project bike. This addiction never started until I got competitive over the fat tires for a non-runner at an auction and paid too much for a non-runner but she has worked out well. Also Admiral I don't have a fellow T-Dub adventurer like Truelight nearby, so am going to have to train up family. My son of 18 enjoys it and rides well but is off to college next year by bus, not T-Dub but we can have a few good rides this summer before he goes.

Am off the the Eastern Freestate mountains this weekend with family. Am not sure if we can fit a T-Dub on but if I squeeze one will reciprocate with some pics and maybe a video.

Nice deal. She looks like she'll clean up well. You can put a few hundred into fixing up and still have a very sweet deal.

My inner geek is curious about the government use of TW's there. Were there large numbers of TW's in service at one time?

And was the stainless muffler on your other bike common on the gummint models, or just some stopgap replacement item installed by a P.O.?

I can already read your mind Russ. If the stainless mufflers were common, and hence reasonably priced, you may need to import 13 from South Africa. Maybe Big Torque can fill a 20' shipping container and we can have a muffler orgy. And if he can't find enough mufflers, maybe he could fill the rest of the container with South African Pinotage. I know you don't drink the stuff, but I do. Tom

Pinowho? Can you make dat from Welch's and Everclear?

I've always had an interest in the "Agbike/postiebike/Rokon/ToteGote/Bikes of Burden/climb a tree/go slow" flavor of motorcycle ever since I watched my old man switch the dual sprockets on a Honda 55 so it wouldn't go fast enough to get me killed. I got kilt anyway, but the interest in "working bikes" stuck with me.

I've never really owned many of the above, but when I was younger and saddling up at O'dark-thirty just to catch a day's worth of horses scattered over several square miles I sure resented the boss for not providing one. About the only place I ever saw bikes used for much of anything work-related in this country was on Navajo land, pre-quad.

Aside from that, the mental image of some civil servant type who happens to hate motorcycles being forced to make his rounds on said conveyance is downright heartwarming.

The stainless muffler replacement is common here as a replacement for the stock mildsteeles when they rust. Usually they are straight through and terribly loud but favoured by those who want to make an impression with their thumpers. They are pretty easy to pick up at the chop shops.

Mine with the baffle box is unusual and more expensive and must have been a special demand from the Dept of Agric to keep things quiet on the state farm.

This latest bike has a custom stainless muffler which looks like a straight through but is quieter so looked up the pipe and it seems to have a baffle plate in it. Am glad though since my other old bikes had straight throughs and I found them too noisy.

I have heard that the army used TWs in a big way but not sure where they wound up.

There was no riding this weekend, the canopy had to go on the truck. Rain and a toranado where we were in the Freestate mountains on Sunday. But Saturday would have been great. My next priority is a two bike trailer. I have an old axle that would do the job nicely. Still the farm on which is in great riding country with a lower rainfall than here. Cars and trucks get quickly trashed by the roads there - TW country. So when the rain gets going here as it is now - we will take bikes and horses and head over that way for a summer month or two.

I noticed that you guys who ride all the time seem to live in deserts. Here is is raining so much I don't even want to take the canopy off and take the new Old Babe down to the police for clearance. The big guy pissed on my parade!

Thanks will do. My '95 had been stading so long that the speedo only worked when you got up to 40 but is fine now. Have not lubed it yet but no noise, so am not sure if that is the root of it. Will tear her down and lube everything though and check brakes etc
