Well I un-plugged the pilot screw today and did it with the carb on the bike
An adjustment seemed to make things somewhat less boggy on take off and did improve the idle. I got a bag of parts when I got the bike and it would seem that the previous owner put in a #118 main jet and a #42 pilot jet. Any of that sound like the right direction? Also in the bag of parts was a main jet splash ring-identified by the great pictures here on the site. I have to assume that there isn't one in the bike at this time-problem? I plan to ride it some more and let the Techron do it's stuff before I have to take the carb off the bike. Any thoughts guys?? TIA, Gary

Depending on what your elevation is and if that #118 is a Yamaha # and not some aftermarket size # I would think a #118 is a bit small. I think most people go up to #130 because these things run so lean from the factory.

Do NOT get a 130. You have the early style carb on your 1994. N2 is referring to jet sizes on newer style carbs. The jets and sizes are different between the two carbs.

Box stock your bike had a 114 main, which means at 118 you have jetted two sizes larger. If you are running a stock airbox and stock exhaust that may be a bit rich, but then again, it may not be depending upon your elevation and riding conditions.

You may want to grab a 116 to assist in your carb tune. Follow the guides in the Tech section.

Not to hyjack here, but I just picked up the Keyster carb kit which comes with a #116 main and a #38 pilot. Why would they go richer on the main and leaner on the pilot? Will a #40 need to be ordered?

Oopps! Good catch Sorethumb! Sorry!!! Didn't even think about the different years.

No biggie. It can get confusing when discussing carb problems and jetting when numbers are referenced given the two carb styles.

I don't know for sure that putting a 130 new jet in an old carb would alter the space-time continuum, but why take the chance...

If the bike runs fine, don't worry with the carb. If the bike exhibits rideability problems indicative of a carb tune problem, make appropriate adjustments.
