Can anyone suggest one or more good YouTube videos about adjusting carburetors that would be helpful to a novice like myself?

No video suggestions, but why are you contemplating adjustment?

Did you replace your bad Petcock?
No, there was nothing wrong with the petcock, it was an actual crack in the Clarke gas tank. Probably from my enthusiastic tree-hugging on the 'Ridge' ride. :rolleyes: It was high on the underside, just above the left puck. It probably started small, but all the riding I do eventually made it grow enough to make the leak really bad. I thought it was the petcock until I got the tank off and found the crack. I've got the original tank on it for now until I sort out the carb issue.

Long story short: I bought parts to refresh Frank's carb - o-rings and needles and seals and everything. Cleaning went well. Put it back on the bike and it would idle, but died when I gave it gas. I couldn't figure out how to fix it and really wanted to ride, so I gave in and took it to the local Yamaha/Kawasaki/Suzuki dealer. Got it back and it ran - a little high strung, but it was cold so I figured it would idle down once I got underway.

Nope.

It ran like crap. They had the idle set way up so it was just racing to keep the engine running. When I dialed down the idle to where it had been when I first got the bike, it had a hell of a time running. So I dialed it back up. Then I realized the choke wasn't doing a thing at all. It was like the idle was set so high the choke had no where left to go.

<sigh>

So the hope is I can try to be patient and once more attempt to learn enough to maybe figure out how to set it myself. If not, I'll bite the bullet and take it to an independent shop and see if they have any luck. I'm an old apprentice, so I learn best visually. If I can see it done, hear the difference in how it sounds, I learn faster. Thus the request for a video.

1. Did you lube (diluted soap, water, spit) the rubber when reinserting the carb? If not, maybe a vacuum leak.
2. Is the rubber from carb to head in good condition?
3. Did you look into the pilot jet orifice...is it a clean circle? I usually probe (gently) with a safety pin.
4. What is the mixture screw setting? Should be about 2 1/2 turns out from a gentle seat.

If the choke does nothing, you may have a clogged up pilot jet. I recommend a new one and larger than the stock size. One of the secrets to my build was a 34 pilot jet recommended by Ronnydog. It made a wonderful difference in how the bike started, warmed up and ran. Just my 2 cents...

*assuming you have the older style carb.

This one is for a similar CV carb our mixture screw is in the bottom front.


Here is one for a different bike but it is the same process for the TW. I needed to remove the throttle cables to turn my carb and the plastic panels by the tank.

If the choke does nothing, you may have a clogged up pilot jet. I recommend a new one and larger than the stock size. One of the secrets to my build was a 34 pilot jet recommended by Ronnydog. It made a wonderful difference in how the bike started, warmed up and ran. Just my 2 cents...

Tommy -- wasn't it maybe a #44 pilot jet? Stock size is #40. #34 would be leaner.
I too went to a larger pilot jet and it made an unbelievable difference, especially when starting it up cold. Tony

Make sure you can see through the pilot jet, that it is a clean passage. The smallest bit of dirt will ruin how the TW runs.

#34 is a bigger pilot jet for the new carb. #31 is the stock jet.

Edit did you mean are they the same type? I think so they look identical.

Nope the main jets are #126 stock in my 2014 CA models pilot jet stock is #31.

What I mean is are they interchangeable? Will the old style high speed and pilot jets work in the new carb? Are they the same?

Do the new style jets look like this?

I think my 2016 runs like crap, 60 degree day and it is so cold natured it is ridiculous. It is also so lean on decel that it is popping and cracking on decel. I am sure the factory has it leaner than poop for emissions and mileage. I to am looking for the best common recommendations for a rejet or tune up specs.

Turn the air/fuel mixture screw (pilot jet) to 2 1/2 turns out.
