The oil filter change guide here and the yamaha manual say the oil filter element can be cleaned and reused unless damaged.

My local yamaha dealer says you can not see the damage and tells me I should change it every time.

I'd ask in the oil change thread but it is locked. I'm sure this has been asked before. I'm just wondering what others have been doing. I'm thinking maybe every 3000 miles unless it obviously needs changed.

Also I see some references to a fuel filter discussion I can't find on the old forum, if someone could link me I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

The oil filter can just be cleaned and reused. Be careful if you replace the oil filter, there are reports of Yamaha dealers supplying the incorrect filters. I would suggest changing your oil more frequently. It only takes a quart, so I do mine about every 5-600 miles.

I use and re-use the wire mesh filters. I will clean it every 4th or 5fth time I change the oil and even then it doesn't look dirty. I change the oil every 1500 to 2000 miles and the oil inside the engine always looks new and clean.

I have now 11000 miles on my TW. On average I put about 750 miles on my bike per month. Change oil every 1500 miles and new filter every second change. Changing oil every 5- 600 miles, I would spend more time changing oil than riding.

If you decide to reuse your old filter do not use brake cleaner!! It can swell up the rubber end cap and then you will have no choice but to buy a new one. You can buy a 1/4" straight fuel filter and make it work but a 90 degree one from Wacula Racing fits better. Also I change my oil every 2000 miles. Air cooled engines can be hard on even the best stuff. Be sure to replace the O-rings. No sense in having a leak.

Thanks for the replies. My bike had 400 miles on it I changed it @ 500 it was awful.

I am @ 800 and going to change it again today. I think I'll get a new filter and keep the used one as a spare in my pack.

I think it's normal to have mud during the break in period. At least I hope it is.

With the fuel filter the only small one i can find is the wire screen and stone type with no paper element. Better than nothing but I'd feel better if it had a paper screen.

Thanks for the help guys

Is there a specific part number? I changed mine after I bought my bike, and I noticed the filter element looked slightly different than the one that was in there. It went together perfect and I have been riding without issue. Is there a way I can check to be sure I have the right filter in there?

Thanks - Bart

It is 5H0-1344-09-00 and should have 4 holes. This is the number the local yamaha guy has and what the oil change thread here has. $11.99 from dealer.

I never seem to have much luck with dealers working on my vehicles so this might come off as a little cynical but here goes. If the oil filter is prone to damage, it is probably because of the service tech who damaged it while removing it. As you can see, some of us change oil frequently. The filter itself is wire mesh. As long as that is not damaged, I would suspect the filter to be good for as long as the gasket is good and the cage is not deformed.

Bart, make sure you have the four slots and the four holes. If not your motor may not be getting the oil flow it needs. From Goldenhtr's sticky:

I still have the original oil filter with the non-pleated screen after 2 years and 3700 miles. I don't agree that you cannot see damage. Just look carefully at all parts of the screen and especially where it is epoxied to the housing. I clean my screen about every 500 miles since it is so quick and easy, but only change oil every 2000. I use a small paintbrush and kerosene. Then I inspect all the little nooks and crannies of both the housing and the cap for metal particles and get them out with a paper towel and toothpick, or Q-tip. Inspect closely for lint on the O-ring.

Cleaning the pleated screen is just as easy, but you can't as easily see what kind and how many particles there are in it. I do have one as a spare for the time when I DO see damage to the original.

MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE you are buying the right filter, as the other posters have said!
