My 1990 has low miles and the forks seem fine . I'm doing an appearance makeover and wish to replace the blue fork boots with black ones. Pointers anyone ?

I want black boots on my '95 too and am planning to tear the forks apart tomorrow night. Read the three pinned threads up above named "Fork Oil - changing" , " Beginner's Guide to Fork seal replacement " and "Fork Service - A TW Without Forks is Like a Duck Without a Bill " . They will walk you through everything and also point out other reasons to inspect and tweak the forks.



Edit: I decided to take mine apart tonight. Just changing the boots is a piece of cake but for a bike as old as yours you should take them all the way apart....at least to inspect them. They usually get condensation inside..then rust & goop. I'd never done it before on a TW and it took less than 2 hours, including time to make a tool by welding some 1/2 nuts on a piece of threaded rod. It's supposed to be 19mm (.748") but 1/2" nuts are .740" flat to flat and they worked fine.

05 boots are black, I just picked up a pair at Cheapcycleparts, but they were a bit costy at $25 each. the change out will be easy for you if its just the boots your doing. Just pull the front tire, fender and pull one tube at a time to change out the boot. becareful the clamps are a little fragile and bend easy.

Before you remove the forks from the triple tree mark them so you can re install them exactly the same way they were when you removed them.



If they are worn or bent a little and you install them differently than the way you pulled them out the bike may not track right -- mine pulled to the left. After trying many different positions it finally tracks straight ahead now.

I got my boots from pro cycle with a black plastic tank and a black seat cover . The boots were17.95 for the pair.

Why one fork at a time ?
