I approached my local bike shop(independent) about changing my rear sprocket and installing an o-ring chain on my 2009 TW 200. He quoted me $150 for labor, as I have the parts. Is this way too high? I have read threads on here where most do this themselves-is this not too hard for me to do? I am somewhat mechanically inclined and have a good number of good tools. I have the shop manuals downloaded, any tips would be much appreciated Please help!! Thanks!!

Very easy to do. If you have the tools, save the 150 and do it yourself. You'll laugh when you're done and say, "THAT would cost 150 bucks to do?'

I would get a new front sprocket as well, its another ten bucks or so, but you'll start with a fresh set of sprockets and chain. You'll need a left side gasket and and do an oil change (because you have to take off the entire left case cover, not hard, just some bolts).

If you don't want to do the front sprocket, then your job just got easier.

Is your chain already cut to correct length? If not, you'll have to do that. I bought a chain breaker. They aren't that expensive.

Let us know if you need any more help. I can take pictures for you too if you want.

My local dealer charges $68 per hour for labor. A basic oil change, lube and filter is $29.95 + cost of oil and filter so about $50. I can save the $30 by doing it myself! They also wanted $39 per tire to mount two tires.

Do it yourself especially if all you are doing is changing the rear sprocket and chain.

The way I shorten the chain is to grind the head of the rivet off and then take a punch (or small nail) and hammer out the pin.

You do have a torque wrench, right?

Do it by yourself!

If you doubt your skills, just remember that even if the dealship is asking you 70$/h for the job, it doesn't mean it won't be done by a kid (trainie). I've seen it many times thanks to my job.

I did this job about a month ago ... the worst part was compressing the master link enough to allow me to insert the retaining clip. This tool would have helped, but I had to hack something together with a small "C" clamp and a small socket. While you are doing this, you can also inspect your rear brake pads inside the drum and replace if necessary.

Ok, I want to do it myself-and everyone says it is easy. I just want to change the rear sprocket and put an o-ring chain on. If some will give me step by step, I can do it. Also my email is [email protected] and my ph # is 3184878881 Thanks, Chris

Do you need help from start to finish or just certain parts?
