Clunking- maybe the shock mount ??

Hi All
I've got a clunking that is obvious and annoying when on anything other than pavement. I’ve checked everything I think, and what I saw moving most was where the pin goes through the lower end of the shock to the mount on the swing arm. I’ve got swing arm off the bike with the plan to fill/weld the hole and rebore. However my welder, whom I have a very high opinion of regarding mechanical things, thinks there’s not enough play there to create the clunk I’m getting. As near as I can tell everything else is tight. So does anyone else get this clunk and know the cause or is it just a TW thing to live with. I got the bike used but with only very low mileage. I really like this bike and want to get rid of that clunk for when off road.
Any suggestions and ideas would be welcome.

Asked the same question about the shock mount right after I got my 23 model. People on the forum said the TW was built to a price point, if I remember correctly. Always been that way. And people have done the machine work you describe and mounted the shock in a more conventional manner. I live with it and go as fast as I can, sitting on the seat. At 65 years old, that's fast enough for me.

Thanks for your reply. So to confirm, you’ve had the clunk right from brand new, is that correct?

The clunking noise I recall most often referred to on forum is more related to front suspension with the solution often simply adding more fork oil.
I had the front fork clunk when bike was new but serviced the forks cleaning and adding fresh 10w oil untill at the forum recommended 125mm from top of compressed empty fork legs which made my clunk go away.

WillyD, that's correct-clunking from day one. I thought pins were for tractors. Could be Yamaha views the TW as the tractor in their lineup. Maybe TW really means Tractor Wannabe...

Yep, a poor design. My bike doesn't make the clunking noise from the rear shock yet, but probably will later on. I grease the pin once in a while, maybe that will keep the wear down a little. Needs a bearing or replaceable sleeves.
