The head I swapped onto my TW came with a compression release to make the engine it came off of easier to kick start -- and it worked as designed on the TW!

The procedure I used was to kick it slowly until it came up on the compression stroke. I then flipped the lever over which opens the exhaust valve a little bit, then I gave the engine a good kick. The kick lever was very easy to kick down and the engine turned over rapidly. The little compression release lever is spring loaded so when the crank goes around and the exhaust valve opens the little lever springs back automatically.

The battery in the TW was low so there was no hope using the electric starter but every time I used the kicker with the compression release it started on the first kick.

If you buy one of these on ebay try to get the rocker arm that went with it. The end of the rocker arm is ground for clearance (red arrow) of the compressing release gizmo. You can take a stock one and make it work, no problem I think, but it would be easier just to swap it.

So, if you want to make life a little easier consider a compression release gizmo thingy for kick starting your TW.

I learned to ride steep country on a compression release equipped 2-stroke Montessa using it as a Jake brake to maintain control on those scary long hi-pucker factor descents. What a great idea for the TW if it would work for braking as well as starting. No fear of locking up the rear brake for newbies or in the mud or snow. Makes the rear drag but not skid allowing one to focus on front brake modulation. I want one. Gosh, I want two!
Thanks elime. Link or search parameters?

My XT500(no electric start) had a compression release, but I have a hard time understanding why it is needed on a TW200? I have never kick-started a TW200 - is it that difficult?

BW200 and the ATV 3 wheelers.
Yep!

There are a lot of machines that use the same basic engine as the TW with the same head. I was searching ebay for really cheap spare heads as in <$30. They are really dirty and grimy and will usually have s stripped hole or two. What I do is clean them, lap the valves, new seals and for the stripped holes is use either a longer bolt or JB Weld a stud in the hole and use a nut and washer. If you use a longer bolt run a bottom tap into the hole and even if you have to use JB Weld and a stud at least the stud will have a couple of threads to hang onto.

Anyway, this compression release came on one of the heads I bought.

When I weighed 210 lbs. kick starting a TW was a lot easier than it is now that I weigh 152 lbs. For anyone that is smaller, not as strong or heavy this could make the difference in being able to kick start a TW easily or kick starting it with great difficulty.
