Forgive the hijack, but the instrument "clunk" is due to flattened grommets on the gauge mounting pins. Remove the clips, install an extra washer under them and re-install. The front end clunk is almost always due to low fork oil,loose steering bearings, a spacer or pacer shim off center even a loose headlight screw, or the turn signal relay slamming the fairing. At any rate it's not just some loveable mystery trait without cause.
The engine noises on the other hand are total voodoo, gummint conspiracies, or worse.
You seem to sense that yours may be predetonation. Trust your own instincts and look into it for peace of mind.
