My 2006 TW200 with 605 miles runs and accelerates great, but on moderately hard acceleration at higher RPMs, I can hear a crackling sound. Might be detonation, but does not sound like the typical marbles in a bucket sound to me. What gives? Thanks.

With such low miles and being post-2001 I wouldn't think cam chain. Adjust everything. Easy firsts to me would be your chain and your valves. After that's it's hard to say. Sometimes cables, loose levers, etc. If your engine checks out and the wheels aren't falling off, I wouldn't sweat it too much. It's a naturally buzzy bike at speed and things are prone to shake around. Just make sure nothing important is shaking away.



Maybe drive by somebody and see if they hear it or if you can record it.



Also consider an intake leak or some sort. Unlikely it would give that kinda sound, but it's possible and very noisy when it gets bad.

as said, check valves, cam tensioner and for loose items then forget about it. There are countltess threads on the strange noises of the TW. I use to worry about it at first, but gave up as they were not always the same and TW's are known for the clanky/noisey motors. Do you have the front end clunk---noise from the instrument cluster/shocks when going over larger bumps. So do, some do not. My 2006 does.

Forgive the hijack, but the instrument "clunk" is due to flattened grommets on the gauge mounting pins. Remove the clips, install an extra washer under them and re-install. The front end clunk is almost always due to low fork oil,loose steering bearings, a spacer or pacer shim off center even a loose headlight screw, or the turn signal relay slamming the fairing. At any rate it's not just some loveable mystery trait without cause.



The engine noises on the other hand are total voodoo, gummint conspiracies, or worse.



You seem to sense that yours may be predetonation. Trust your own instincts and look into it for peace of mind.

Adding to this "hi-jack", I started a thread about this clunk sound when going over bumps and thought we came to a consensus that it was due to "stiction" of the forks as it goes away after the first couple of bumps.

My clunk seems to be gone since the fork oil has been changed to 5wt from 10wt. The craclellong sound is also gone as best as I can tell since the carb is adjusted properly. The clunk may be for some the tool box contents or the chain hitting the guard as the chain is so loose as required.....Thanks all....Dan P
