great write up!.. thank you very much for the time and effort to post specific part numbers and step by step pics.

my stock tw is a street only nyc beater. i ride and slide it like my ktm450smr that i raced for 5+ yrs. my tw gets beat on hard and it has never given in. 8k in miles and i finally need a clutch. motor still has good compression and all that was upgraded was brake pads and chain and sprockets. i am amazed that it hadn't grenaded by now. this winter i am tearing it down to add a new clutch, rings and kick starter, wheel bearings, new front fender, lights etc..

the biggest problem i have is the horrible front forks and the less than adequate power.

in all your research did you come up with any ideas for a new inverted front forks conversion or a way to get more power out of it? wondering id a ttr225 would bolt up.

any and all info is appreciated

thanks

Well guys, it's March again! It has been one year since I bought my 1994 TW.

Here are pictures of the TW today.

The last thing I want to add is a rear splash guard of some sort.

Beautiful build!

I recently saw somewhere (Deus?) where the bike had a piece of clear Lexan (polycarbonate plastic?) cut to fit between the frame rails in front of the rear tire and fastened to the frame with zip ties to act as a rear fender/splash guard. It looked great since it was almost invisible to maintain the hollow look. I think it would have to be washed carefully to not scratch and probably need replacing as it got scratched but it should be very inexpensive.

Found it! Here it is at Deus:

I kept a spreadsheet of all of my expenses (except for hours) and I've got $1,400 into the bike (including the cost of the bike).

A quick glance at that number. I paid $600 for the bike and then made $350 selling various plastics, headlight, speedometer, tires, etc. At that point I was into the bike for $250 before any parts were purchased.

The new parts ran me about $1,150.

There weren't many big expenses. Only two items, powder coating (frame + swing arm + tank = $175) and the exhaust pipe ($125), broke the $100 mark.

Most of the cost was spending $28 on a brake cable here, $50 on a tail light there, etc, etc.

I was really lucky to find a very good condition TW for such cheap money. It really made the entire project possible.

I can't really speculate about hours. This took me several months start to finish, but weeks would go by without me doing any work on it. It was the kind of thing I'd work on for a few hours on the weekend here or there. Maybe 40 hours are into it? That could be way off but it's a guess.

Okay, this seals it! We need more than one T'Dub - one to carry stuff when we go camping, run errands, take long road trips, and handle chores around the ranch (that's mine now) - AND one just for FUN that looks totally cool - that's yours. Now, to convince my wife of this FACT.
Well done does not come close to saying what needs to be said about this mod.

I am sorry to see that the photos are gone... This thread is not very fun to read without photos.

I will have to go back through and re-host them all. It will take me some time, but eventually I will get them back on here. Stay tuned!
