They're almost the same plug - according to NGK's spark plug guide the S has a standard 2.5mm electrode and the A is a 'special design' - no more info given than that!

Anyone have any more info. This is the plug I bought today. Should I get the dr8EA or stick with the dr8ES?
Because you are unsure I would stick to the A version. There may be a specific reason for the difference in end construction of the plug that we are unaware of.

Good mystery you have here

Ngk cross ref from regular to iridium plugs shows something is afoot

DR8EA = DR8EIX

DR8ES = DR9EIX

DR8ES-L = DR8EIX

I've seen bits about special design meaning "The electrode has a small split on the end of it to help produce a better spark".

But someone else said special design meant " If you look closely at porcelain part below the firing tip and will see how far sunken it is below the thread part".

ES

EA

Wow old post. However, the difference between the DR8ES and EA is head space. Take a micrometer and measure the thread height. Some engines have the tolerance for the es vs the ea, and this can take the EIX. So before you go putting these plugs in, make sure the piston isn't going to hit it, or you'll be potentially Changing a piston or more.

Sorry for reviving an old post, however I was looking for info and said screw it, I'm gonna investigate.

So in conclusion the ES is shorter approximately .020 than the EA.
