Hi

Can anybody explain the ignition system upgrades from 1987 to present?

It was stated that there are three (3) generations if you will.

Cheers & thanks

First Gen, if you will was 1987 only, first year of the TW. It had a separate lighting coil, the lights only came on if the bike was running. It had no front running light feature and the safeties were wired slightly differently from subsequent runs. It used a 1987-specific CDI unit. The left engine sidecover only accomodates the 1987 charging/lighhting system.

Second Gen was '88-'01. It had an improved single phase, self-contained charging system, CDI was specific to those years, 35 watt headlamp, had front running lights and essentially the same system for the entire run. Left side engine cover again only accomodates components from these years

Third Gen '01 to present. They have a higher output three phase charging system, higher wattage headlamp, their own corresponding CDI unit and self'cancelling turn signals. Nuther slightly different left side cover.

Good summary lizrdbrth.

One minor clarification. The Third Gen '01 to present do not have self cancelling turn signals (just wanted to save someone from trying to fix a feature that isn't there).

Sorry. I meant push-to-cancel. At least mine do.

My Yammie RD400s from the 70's had self canceling blinkers.

If you forgot, the blinker would cancel at a certain distance

of straight travel down the road.

According to the parts lists of 1998 till 2000, there is a different CDI unit and coil.

They also cost less then the 88-97 parts.

It looks like it that I need a new CDI unit for my 96 TW. I wonder if the cheaper 98 CDI will fit on the earlier models.

Again according to the parts lists they all have the same generator till 2000, so it should be possible.

I know this is old but the difference between the 97 and down and 98 and up is only the connector at the cdi box. I have a 93 cdi on my 2000 model and it works just fine, I did have to change the connector though.
