Think I will be picking up an 89 T-Dub tomorrow in need of a new tank. I need it to be all metal to be able to license in Wa. state I think so I am looking to see if anybody knows where to buy one. I saw some online but it said for the California models only???

Cali models have a fartcan fitting and a tipover valve. Other than that, they're interchangeable.

I think you'll find the Clarke to be less money than an O.E.M. You might wanna double check your legality.

No need to plug it. Run an open line down to the ground and call it good.

Cali bikes don't leak when they fall down as long as the gas cap gasket is good and you use the Cali cap. They vent through the fitting, which closes in a tipover. Simple rattleball valve, meant to keep raw gas out of the canister..

Just becomes a redundant vent with a 49-state cap. 'Cept a 49-state cap will give you a bath if you happen to end up under the bike

Just sayin'.

Metal tank requirements are an old wives tale. Looked at this already when thinking about converting an old xr to street legal. Your state is no different:

Can I use a plastic gas tank on my motorcycle?

The gas tank must be approved specifically for use on public roadways. Check with the manufacturer or retail establishment for the intended use of the tank. If its intended use if for off-road only, it is not legal for use on public roadways.

Taken from faq on wa. Patrol website. Throw ya a clark tank on there and never worry about rust again!

Unfortunately, Clarke tanks ( at least my one ) are not street legal. However, buy the one from assquatch. He is a straight shooter and his prices have been very fair.

Clarke tanks are stamped "Not for Highway Use". Petcock side, bottom, to cover their pathetic arses.

No one's ever gunna read it once it's on.

Completely missed where assquatch20 said he still had his. Just put on my passenger pegs he sold me, looks great! I agree with biglefti that would be the way to go.

Do they actually inspect bikes up there?

Unless you need a vin inspection for a lost title or need to ride it for a motorcycle driving permit. I can't imagine you would get busted, Washington State does not inspect bikes yet. Just keep away from the clarke translucent tank. I ride mine all over tacama, puyallup, port orchard, gig harbor and I've never worried about being stopped for my white clarke tank.

A new 1989 Non Cali Tank ....FUEL TANK COMP FARAWAY BLUE 2JY-24110-00-05 at boats.net is going to set you back $456.57 before shipping.

The cali models are listed as obsolete..

I'll agree that unless you're going through a vehicle inspection (which is more common than some might think in metro counties) you can probably get away with plastic. As mentioned above though, the translucent ones might push some officers to look into the legality.

Honestly I don't know if I like the saddle horn look of the Clarke tanks, but I always admired someone who had the sense to expand vertically for more room. In bikes, not always a great virtue, but it works for Clarke. Hopefully they can expand downwards a bit for another gallon someday.
