Here is another bit of my 110 mile ride a couple of weeks ago. Wanted to see if I could find a couple of things that forum members have an interest in. Will update further after work tonight.
About 20 years ago I rented a house next door to a Lady (90yrs old). Her husband built the house I was living in when he and Lois first got married. As things improved, they built a bigger house next door. When I moved next door, the husband was long gone, so I got to sit with Lois; open cans of peaches, count out her 'allowance' from the cash she kept in a shoebox in the closet. Then there were the ackward moments when I would get a call at 3a.m. Seems that Lois would sometimes fall out of bed, fortunately she was never hurt, but I guess because of her age, the skin on her feet was very dry and smooth (?). The floor in her bedroom was of all things, linoleum. With this slick material and smooth dry skin, she could not get herself off the floor.
She was on the big side as compared to me, so the process of getting her back into bed was not particularly dignified. I knew she would never let me buy one of those 'people hoists' because to the cost, but I suggested an engine hoist would be much cheaper, and she was ok with that.
Anyway, Lois use to tell me stories about going to Susanville with her Grandfather who owned a 'fleet' of cargo wagons. It seemed to be a trip that took the better part of a week. She suggested that they would haul up lots of nuts, Almonds, Walnuts and such. On the return trip they would carry dairy products.
I am reasonably certain, that the area with the cabins and over grown meadow would have been routinely passed on such a business trip. The other route over those mountains is much higher, although there are old homestead cabins at the base of the pass as well. Gerry
