I was wondering if anyone could tell me what year my 200cc motor is from.

My bike is a frankenstein of sorts, custom built up from various parts by the last owner.

Engine number: 2JL-065397

I have to replace the clutch ( which I already have), just want the relative gasket and oil filter part numbers & new oil!

Will do a new spark plug while I'm at it, and new air filter wouldn't go amiss.

Needs a good spruce up.

Thanks!

Pretty sure gaskets and filter haven't changed. Just make absolutely sure that they actually give you the right oil filter. There was a mislabeling problem going on where you got restricted flow to the head and ruined the thing quickly. It absolutely has to have four holes on the inner-facing side. The plus side there is that it's really more of a strainer than a filter and is totally reusable. Just spray it down with WD40 to clean the gunk out.

Another part problem is base gaskets from around '06-'07. When shopping, just say you have a 2012 model if it's gaskets you're looking for. The ones from those couple years were made from something by someone who didn't seem to understand what a gasket is supposed to do, and it'll leak within a couple thousand miles usually.

From the limited resources we've passed around on engine numbers, the 2YJ leads me to believe it's an '01 or newer motor. There are other very obvious things to identify one, but not so much in your case. The only engine changes that I know of are electrical and the kickstart being removed in 2001. The carb changed in '01 as well, but you can fit either one to the motor, so that's no good for learning. Yamaha will tell you pretty easily if you contact them, though.

Edit: I just clicked your Tumblr link. Looks like you've got a '01+ front rim and spokes laced on an older hub? Definitely Frankensteined, but asking Yamaha is your easiest way to go. The only other ways I can think of are to hope the carb with it came with it, which would tell you 01 or newer if the cables are on the right side, and pre-01 if on the left. Or take the left cover off, check stator & magneto numbers and hope those parts weren't switched out. None of it's a big deal if you just need gaskets, seals, and a filter, but when electrical parts need replaced, it's a bridge you'll have to cross.

Also looks like you've got a some old Honda singles there, with the one piece heads. I've got one myself in a box. Bitch to compress the valves.

As far as your electrical system goes, the CDI can be an indicator. This is a pic of the late (post '01) CDI and the one below it is of two versions of the early CDI. As you can see the early units are about half the size of the late versions and the wiring is molded directly into them. The later units have a pin connector at the top.

Odds are good that if you have the early CDI you also have the early single-phase charging system, rotor, stator and pulse coil and wiring harness. If you have the late CDI you most likely have the late charging system and associated parts:

The only reason I asked is because the Yamaha parts guy asked what year, because he thought the gaskets were different.

Anything to do with kickstart? Earlier model? So it's either 1987-2001 or 2001 on?

I will look at the CDI etc when I get home..

Here's a couple of pics.

Unless it's a complete Frankenstein you have the early motor with the slide carb and kicker.

If it has the early style CDI and the headlight comes on with the key it's an '88-'00 engine and charging system.

If it has the early style CDI and the headlight comes on only when the bike is running it's an '87 setup.

Very few engine parts are different between the years, but if you narrow it down to a range of either '88-'00 or '01-up you should be safe ordering most things.

The only meaningful difference between an '87 and an '88-'00 will the left side cover and the electrical stuff. If it's an '87 they had their own specific CDI, but it looks just like the one on the other early bikes.

You'll be fine with filters and gaskets.

Wow, that's a first.. a local store coming up with original parts at the same price as cheap imported ones..

on the same day!

So, I ordered these this morning, and they couriered them in from the Yamaha parts warehouse in a few hours.

So I am all set to put the new clutch in.. any hints or tips on this model? Should be easy
