I have a 2003 TW with issues. New battery. Engine starts no problem, idles slow/inconsistent, but for as long as you let it. Dies with any throttle. Don't know where to start.



Off topic, but is there a thread/post which details a good list of tools for motorcycle maintenance? Im just getting into working on the moto. Have basic set now: sockets, wrenches, etc, most everything to do bicycle maintenance, as I'm a bicycle mechanic by trade. And are there any general motorcycle maintenance resources that would be more beneficial than the combination of this site and the service repair manuals?

This ain't bad to read at all. I'd start by making sure your idle screw is adjusted right, which you can read about on here. It's most likely in your carb, regardless.

Yes if the bike sat with fuel in it the carb is likely in need of cleaning. Not big deal. The Pilot circuit is likely clogged up.

Just a, keep in mind note. Harbor Freight has a ultra-sonic cleaner they sell ($79.00ish)....reviews have been positive.These units clean all of the nooks and crannys!.FYI.

don't need a $79 sonic cleaner. you need a $5 can of carb cleaner and get rid of that old gas.

No argument here, Rising Sun. The can of carb cleaner will work fine.



The ultrasonic cleaner is just another way to accomplish the same thing... and you can clean your dentures, too.

finally getting around to cleaning my carb. do i need to get rid of the old gas in the tank as well, or did you just mean the gas/buildup in the carb?
