Just decided to make this trip today. I saw some You Tube videos of some guys riding up here in the Fall and it looks like a good area. National forest, with lots of forest service roads, and what looks like a good network of motorcycle only and 50 inch or less roads to play on. I know the Kern plateau pretty well, and it can be an inferno this time of year, but this is at 6000 feet, so lots of trees! Me the the kid are heading up Friday AM dark:30 and hitting a rifle range above Kernville around 8:00 and should be up the camp grounds by noon.
I should clarify the camping location. I'd like to stay at Evans Flat camp, since it's closer to more trails, but I'm driving a minivan, so I'm not sure I'm going to be able to make it all the way down the forest service road. Just depends. It's off the 155, and there are campgrounds near Shirley Meadows that I know I can get the car to, which is what I'll do if the van can't handle the road. Either way, the trails and roads all interconnect here, so it should be some good riding.
It's short notice, but I wanted to post it in case there were folks in the area or anyone else who needed something to do this weekend. Anyone in the group been up in this area? Any advice on road conditions and water availability would be appreciated. Also, in case anyone is really familiar with the area, is Sawmill Road, before you get to Wofford Heights, a decent road? Looks like a beast, but the map says it's improved??? Anyone?
