I recently bought a 1987 TW that had not been running for years. I got it running but it had a noise coming from the left crankcase. At times at idle it would make a noise and the engine would stop. I pulled the flywheel to inspect the starter clutch. As soon as I pulled the flywheel, all the round dowels and springs came loose. The socket head screws are not centered with the cover. It appears I've found the problem but I don't know the fix.



Can the starter clutch be serviced? How is it disassembled? What caused the problem?

That is correct. The cover was almost covering the 3 socket head screws. I'm concerned about what caused this as I was unable to turn the cover back to the correct position. I did disassemble the clutch as pictured. I assembled it back around the starter gear and it doesn't turn smoothly. Cheap cycle parts has the complete starter cluch assembly for $80. Still curious what caused the problem.

Disassembling these parts may fall... Sometimes...

We must disassembly the rotor slowly... With the bolt M16 (1.5 mm)



To reassembly the rotor, should have a small movement of rotation (contrary to clock)

What Christddel is saying is as you reassemble the rotor, turn the rotor slightly anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise?) as you put it on to keep the rollers in their proper place.



Trying to write technical stuff in a foreign language is not the easiest thing, but I think Christddel does pretty good.

Well, this happened to me. My starter motor would spin, but it wouldn't start the bike. For a couple months now, I've been hearing a rattling sound on the left side of the bike. I knew it didn't sound good, but the bike ran great so I didn't think anything of it.



I pulled the rotor off this morning and found that the three bolts that hold the starter clutch onto the rotor were sheered off. The sheered bolts must have been the rattling noise I heard. Maybe they sheered one at a time?



Luckily, I have a parts bike that has a rotor and good starter clutch assembly.



How in the heck does this happen? I am lucky that I have a kickstarter!

christddel, have you used a lightened flywheel in your TW? I wanted to test this in my bike.

I had the same thing happen on my raptor six sixty, but in the raptor there are six bolts.
I think the cause was my buddy Greg freaking out after a wheelie and hitting the start button with the motor running
