I would practice using the front and rear brake separately and then practice using them together. I use 2 fingers on the front brake so I can still run the throttle if needed. A steep gravely or muddy hill and the front tire won't have enough traction to keep you from sliding backwards.

What he say's ^^^^^^^.

Gotta learn to lean slightly to the left on the plant foot side while right foot is engaging the brake pedal on the right. Trying to twist the throttle while simultaneously releasing the front brake is not a good recipe if you need to get going on a hill.
