I've pretty much read this entire thread in the last day or two but I still have a couple of questions regarding the Shinko 241 vs the Pirelli MT43. My riding is approximately broken down like this: 55% gravel, 25% pavement, 15% singletrack, 5% off-trail.

I understand the two tires look quite similar but I'm interested in the small details, which can make a big difference in my opinion. I'm familiar with how body position and small changes in psi can affect traction, so no need to discuss those. Is one of the tires better off-road? Does one work better on singletrack? How would you compare the two rubber compounds? Is one heavier than the other (I couldn't find a weight for the MT43 anywhere)? Does one have a more supple carcass? Which one clears mud better?

I know that many will think I'm diving too deep here but I come from a "professional" mountain bike racing background where I spent way too many sleepless nights obsessing over different tires. I was always changing setups based on different locations/conditions/race venues. I know, I have issues.

I'm all for educated guesses but I'm looking for feedback from people who have extensive first-hand experience with both.

Thanks!

No offense E, but you are overthinking it. Both are fantastic choices to be a replacement front tire on the TW, and both will be better in most situations than the stock tire. I doubt you'll find anyone here with "...extensive first-hand experience with both." as a front TW tire. Mostly because, well, we are cheap. We are cheap and you can get several miles/years out of these tires.

The choice between the two is Pirelli and what that name and reputation and price point brings. Then there is the value oriented Shinko brand. Each has a slightly different tread pattern. Pick one, or buy both, because none of those options are going to use up all of your stimulus money.

Have fun!

But I must know all the answers! 😂 You're right Larry, I'm totally overthinking it. However, on the off chance that someone here has some experience with both, I'd love to learn more about the two! I have a habit of researching things (anything) to death...in case that wasn't already obvious.

I'm leaning towards the MT43 because in photos the tread looks ever so slightly more aggressive and that it would work better on soft surfaces (something I'd appreciate). I also can't help but wonder if it's a slightly softer rubber compound (something which is often true of more expensive tires in the MTB world). But, if all things are equal between the two, there's no reason to spend another $30 for a name brand.
