I have the same set up. I attach the fuel pack when I expect I'll need additional mileage range. Kolpin is a quality product.

To clarify... my fuel pack bracket is bolted vertically to my CycleRack.com rear rack, so that the fuel pack sits upright when attached. The bracket is left on permanently, the fuel pack only when needed. I find that a vertical mount is less likely to leak fuel when on rugged terrain.

I've had problems trying to carry gas cans held on with bungie cords. Okay on smooth pavement, but they tend to bounce around on any but the smoothest terrain. My solutions include a Clarke XT350 tank and a custom rear rack with built-in auxilary tank.

my koplin fuel pak jr in on bracket attached to factory rack (not rubber pad) which is laying down and not vertical like some I've seen. I have inexepensive saddlebags that fit over fuel pack with a bungee cargo net holding it. I wanted to keep storage stuff on back as low as possible so if (when..) I crash I don't get hung up on it when I tumble/roll off. I did ponder on it leaking so have spout facing left side of bike and away from exhaust. Its never leaked a drop of fuel and take fuel pack off and store vertical when not using bike. It may help a little keeping weight lower on bike too.
