So, I'm apparently the kind of girl who sees a neat project, buys the stuff to do it, then never ends up having time to complete it. I had found this gel seat mod for my '07 FZ6 in another forum, bought the supplies to do it, and then got busy with life and other things. It's all still sitting in a box in my closet after a year, waiting for me to bring the seat inside & take it apart. I guess the foam in the stock seat hasn't deteriorated enough to properly motivate me.



In the past year, I've learned that the little TW can still leave one quite sore after a good 300+ mile dual-sport ride. Nevermind the fact that it takes at least an hour's ride to get to the good wooded conservation trails around here...

So out of curiosity, has anyone done this gel-insert modification to their TW seat?

I had done something similar to a 1996 Bandit 600 I had owned for about 5 years. I bought a gel pad that went on top of the seat while on a ride through Arkansas, but the problem was that it boosted me up about another inch when I was already tippy-toe on the Bandit to begin with. When I got back home, I took the cover off the seat, scooped out the appropriate section of seat foam, stuck the the inner gel pad in there & re-covered the seat. Worked like a charm for several more years and about 30k miles until I found a stellar deal on the FZ6....couldn't resist the siren call of fuel injection.

I hadn't thought about it until I got the bug to work on the TW again, after a discussion about an upcoming overnight dual-sport ride (Swinging Bridges, first weekend in May).



I have a couple of other issues to take care of on the bike before I think of tackling a seat mod....not a fan of the drum brakes, and the carb could use a good cleaning & maybe a re-jet.



Still, if anyone has done a seat mod on the TW, please share!

Yes, I did something almost identical a year ago and I can last for about 4 to 5 hours now....huge improvement!!

This site was good for shaping techniques:



http://www.diymotorcycleseat.com/ I used a razor knife and a 2" rotary wire brush on a hand drill.....BE CAREFUL!!!

I only spent $40!

I used a smaller gel pad that had memory foam on one side, so I didn't need the blue sheet. It was a little fussier getting the pad inlet nicely so there were no ledges, but then I just put the cover back on and re-stapled it. There are several vendors for gel pads, the one I used is no longer in business but this is a close approximation:

Wow! Great post, with an awesome resource!

DIY site: saved! Wish I could have had that at my disposal when doing the Bandit's seat. It wasn't ugly, but I could have done better if I had simply had that info available at the time. :/

I can tell in time I will be doing some seat improvement. I know my limitations though and I will likely just pay for this improvement.
