What would be a good gps for dual sport riding with a emphasis on off road riding, in wooded areas mostly. I tried a search but it won't let you look for anything with just 3 letters.

From another GPS thread:

I use a handheld unit. Delorme Earthmate PN-60. It's waterproof, shockproof, full featured, runs off a pair of AA batteries (alkaline, lithium, rechargeables, any type) or 12V cord or AC cord. I have it mounted w/ a RAM mount. I use it on all my bikes, moto or peddle, kayaking, hiking, skiing, geocaching, etc... Has topo (military grade topo), street, nautical, satellite maps... Delorme has the best maps in the industry... Mine has 3.5GB on internal memory (up to 16GB now available), has standard SD card slot, you can add another 32GB of memory using an SD card.

I have a Garmin 60CSx that I use in my TW, King Quad and in my truck when I get in back country. I have a mount that clips into the base that I have mounted on these vehicles, and its waterproof. Battery life is awesome if you don't power it off your bike.

Goof luck!

GPS are great most of the time but a compass and map backup are a good idea in the event the technology quits. I also have a tendancy to not pay as much attention to direction when I'm using GPS as when I'm using the compass. GPS units are getting very reliable but one fall could leave you with no means of finding your way home. Just a thought.

You are right on. I love my Garmin Rino, but always carry a compass and map when riding. I like to unfold a map and have a wider view of the area. Its easier to point to an area on the map than scroll through the GPS. Also, some off-road areas aren't always mapped correctly on the GPS, but a paper map is usually right on. I also carry different maps of the same area, for instance, a Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife, and Forest Service maps.

MY Garmin Oregon has "Find nearest town" .... off you go

Mostly for VSTROM stuff but I have found routes around towns

and busy areas on HD RIDE PLanner so I don't go through

towns.

There are many valleys here in New ENgland and they all have roads usually no

number or real listing on modern maps

I've been using a Nuvi 260w for a while and I have Mapsource installed. The 260 will not except a route sent from Mapsouce, just the waypoints. I recently started using a Zumo 220 which excepts the routes I send from Mapsouce. BUT, The 220 adds weird loops to my routes. They are small, usually just a few miles, and they are more likely to be on the end of the route but have showed up in the middle of a route also. The loops always have a stright line, like you're walking or flying, and then return to the route via the road. Sometimes the stright lines go out from the route and returns on another staight line parelell to the line going out. I know this all sounds weird and it my not make sense because it is hard to describe. I have went through all the settings on the 220 and the 'Preferences" on Mapsource. I have contacted Garmin and all they done was refered me to this Mapsource Tutorial, http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapsourceTutorial.html , which doesn't really address my problem. I let the 220 simulate the ride (where the loop was in the middle of the route) and it did not follow the weird loop. Even though the loop is part of the route as it shows up on the GPS, the little motorcycle went right on down the road like the loop did not exist. So this does not prevent me from using the 220, but it would be better if the little loops were not part of my route. This 220 is brand new, which makes me wonder if something could be wrong with the unit. Any HELP would be wonderful. Thanks

The downloaded route is really just a series of waypoints.

In your actual GPS it uses its OWN internal algorithms and map to go from waypoint to waypoint

-----------------------------------------------------

If its roads I used HD Ride Planner great program and dirt roads are in light beige.

Its the only one that edits stuff like you would think it should.

If you want a specific road then drop some waypoints on that very road.

Go to the next intersection Zoom in place the next waypoint a short way down the new road in the correct direction.

My Oregon will keep on the route and recalculate to the NEXT waypoint if you don't stop it.

Do not stop routing and then try to get back on it will only send you back to the beginning not the next waypoint.

You will enjoy exploring with confidence

Sign up for HD ride planner and you can do it all including publishing and storing the route to be downloaded.
