Evan and I have started thinking about a cool, mellow yet scenic group ride somewhere in the Sierras before we all melt in the summer heat. Mike needs to break in his new Duro ATV tire and find some mud to roost at us.
My best idea so far for a mixed road/ trail adventure that doesn't scratch up bikes nor riders is as follows:

Begin ride @ Tahoe City, ride along lake on western shore of Lake Tahoe on hwy 88 heading south to Homewood, then head into hills on access road to Rubicon Trail. We pass three scenic lakes then explore a few miles of the famous Rubicon Jeep trail before it gets very rough and nasty. Those with better judgement may wait at one of the lakes or poke along untill others return from Rubicon's Cadillac Hill turn around point. Brown-bag lunch in the hills then north on dirt road or singletrack trail past Ellis Peak. From there Baker Pass road can be explored and there is an ORV park back towards Lake Tahoe. We are probably thirty miles or so into ride now and can return to lakeside and head south to Emerald Bay via highway. Then return to Tahoe City. The total milage is not great so we can poke along, stop and chat , enjoy the views and not just pound down a zillion miles

I live an hour away up Hwy 80 past Truckee at California/ Nevada border and can host a herd of campers on my ranch for those who like. Otherwise Truckee, Tahoe , Reno, and Verdi Casinoes have lodging. An cool evening or morning ride may be done from my place day before or after Tahoe Ride on a variety of sandy roads and trails. A simple BBQ would not be out of the question.

Any interest folks? Let me know, this is just an idea open to improvement and I seek your input. This would not be a difficult, remote ride. Mike was thinking to do this soon so timing and your availability is a concern.

Reno has Hot August Nights first week and bracketing weekends the first week in August so area gets crowded with well over 6,000 hot rods and antique cars on display plus another ten thousand or so of wanna-be hot rods of attendees cruising town. These vehicles are awesome to see but hotels get booked up for the event.

If you guys want something more scenic, remote and wild let me know. Logistics can be arranged.

Count me in! ...unless it happens some time between August 15th and September 1st, then I can't.

Looking forward to this. For those close by in the Bay area that have not rode in the Sierras - you should definitely consider this, as they are very, very much worth the attention from yourself and from your two fat tires :)

This is going to be so much fun! I've always wanted to ride the Rubicon trail but really didn't think I could tackle the whole thing. Just to be able to ride on part of it is on my bucket list and who can honestly say they wouldn't want to check it out and be able to tell their jealous riding buddies "I've ridden my TW200 on the world famous Rubicon trail" I would go for july 26 weekend but realize that may be too soon for some of you. Or how about August 2nd? I would head over the hill Friday night and leave sunday when Fred kicks me off his property....:pGetting in a second sunday ride would be a great bonus!

We could call it " The Rubicon Teaser". This just might work. Who else? The ride to top of the Rubicon's Cadillac Hill is quite scenic, not too challenging and provides bragging rights to impress mere mortals. Lake Tahoe is always a beautiful destination.
7/26 or 8/2 dates are both good. Later date gives me a little more time to prep but 7/26 is good if folks can ignore my mess here at the "Pawn-derosa Ranch" a.k.a. Big Sky Ranch. As early responders Adam and Tony get first dibs on a hot shower afterwards. I'll just turn the hose on others after the hot water is gone.

Looks like between last weekend in July and second week in August might work. Lets let a day go by for input from everyone and try to work around any conflicts that interested parties may have.
What schedule works for you Joe?

I most likely will have to adjust my work schedule for any chosen time. Hopefully I can make date you select work. Sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. This sure sounds fun!

Well Joe I for one would really enjoy another ride with you so lets try to build a date around when you can sneak away from the power plant.
Small sized herd of TrailWanderers interested so far, won't be much of a dust cloud:
1) Fred
2) Adam
3) evan
4) Joemama
5) bikerjosh - maybe, hopefully
6) elime - ? Come on Tony, I promise to stop confusing your screen name for Mike's ( Mike's the one I know I can pass on a good day, you I have to chase).
Anyone else?

There are three scheduled Jeepers Jamboree events on the Rubicon Trail from July 23rd through August 3rd so maybe Weekend of August 8,9 and 10 leaves trail less cluttered with stuck rock crawlers, snapped axles, exploded u-joints and empty beer cans. Actually we will not be in tight areas so we can pass any traffic easily.

Many varied and interesting sights to see on the Rubicon Trail:

Like this Toyota with the right rear broken axle and miles from a new one. (That is me with the white helmet -- I don't know who took the picture -- probably Adam.)

Or rock crawlers abusing one another.

As I remember, a lot of the trail looked like this.

And a little bit of it looked like this.

Or this.

this sounds great! I would really like to participate, and have been watching this thread since it was posted.

As fate would have it, my back went out on me this morning at work! :(

I will see how I'm doing when a date is set. m.

Tony's pictures really captures the flavor and variety of Rubicon Trail. The original proposed teaser, or "Appetizer Ride" just catches a hint of this, we would turn around at top of Cadallac Hill or wherever comfortable before anything really nasty.
However how about a second sub-group ride that dives deeper into or through the Rubicon?
We all go together until Cadalac hill, crazy rock rascals continue on to Rubicon springs then return while mellow subgroup finishes ride as originally propossed. We all meet up afterwards if so desired as Lake,a restaurant , a bar or Fred's for a BBQ and beer
Or we have a through ride all the way to Loon Lake/ Wentworth Springs, a real Rubicon2014. Same day, or perhaps we pick two dates so that those who cant make "Appetizer Ride" can make the "Through Ride "?
Getting too many options right?
Lets test who can make what dates and has what preference and let's see if the pieces fall into place. Maybe a Through Ride during Jeepers Jamboree and a Appetizer Ride a week or so later, let mhomadness's back heal up.
Feedback time gentlemen.
And if you wonder why do through ride from Tahoe side, possibly against Jeep traffic it is to avoid climbing up Cadallac Hill. Am I wrong? I know it is more closer to coastal California to approach from southern Loon Lake side. I am open to suggestions.
I for one can be available through end of August, and can happily do either or both rides, it is all fun.
