Hey all, I have an '03 TW that has been running pretty good since I got the valve adjustment right. Unfortunately, the last few times I've tried to start it, it has not been at all cooperative.



It takes about 30 seconds or more on the starter for it to finally fire. Doesn't matter what temperature or how much choke I'm using. It doesn't smell like it's flooding and if I pull the fuel line, it flows very well, so I don't think it's fuel starved either (although I could be wrong).



The air filter only has a few hundred miles on it, but I checked it anyway and it looks pretty much like new.



What else should I be checking here before I start pulling the carb apart?



Oh, once it's started it runs great. Unfortunately, if I turn it off for more than a couple minutes, I have the same issue with starting it again.

Before you go crazy on your carb, check out the post by srs 713 in regards to his battery problem. One of they symptoms was slow/hard starting, this is due to the starter pulling down all the voltage and starving the ignition system. Weak spark, no fire, no run. If you have a small volt meter, just measure across the battery terminals while cranking, you may find your problem lies there.

Tdub was hard to start until I opened the pilot screw a bit.

Check to make sure you don't have too much oil on your air filter. I've seen over-oiled air filters cause similar problems.

Also, hold the bike vertical for starting. Tdub never has started while on the side stand.

My 03 will not start in gear. Maybe to much drag from the clutch so doesn't crank fast enough. Starts in neutral.

Might be tome to check your clutch adjustment.

+1 on the battery. That's exactly how mine was acting for a couple of months before the battery died. New battery and it pop's right to life.

The bike did not appear to be turning over slowly or anything else before the battery died. I thought I was having a carb or other issue.

I am having a similar issue, seems to crank fine but does not start, fortunately I have added the kick start, one quick kick and it starts right up, guess I need a battery. Any suggestions?

i read that you recently did a valve adjustment, but you may want to do a doublecheck to make sure they haven't gotten back out of adjustment. loose or tight valves can make it hard to start as you are saying. too tight and you will loose compression, too loose and you may not get enough air/fuel in your engine. just a thought though, it may be somthing entierley different.
