hey folks

pick up a sweet little 2008 tw200 for my wife... has a minor minor cylinder head leak - more of a weep actually that i ll address later... 1300 miles - $2500... very clean

my ride is a xr400r... looking forward to riding the sierras with my missus and showing her the ropes..

anyway, i m about to replace the front tire... i was thinking about the shinko 241 trials tire.... i run a mt43 on the rear of my xr and i love it... since the new shinko is nearly 4 lb heavier than the stocker, i was wondering if this may be too much of an increase for my wife... she is 140 lb and fairly inexperienced on motorbikes... she s a rockin mtb ride tho so she ll learn fast... she has been out on the tw 5 or 6 time and already has her license...

will the extra weight of this tire be too much ?? i know the benefits but will she have problems handling the bike ??

great forum !!!

cheers !!!

Hello and welcome! You'll have no problems with a replacement tire, it can only do good as the stocker is total crap and unsafe IMHO.

I don't think she'll have any problems either. I replaced mine with a 244, I didn't notice the added weight but I did notice the increase in stability on and off road, the front end will feel a little heavier. Anyone running the stock front tire is in for a pleasant surprise when they change it and I will say it again, I think the stock front tire is dangerous.

You will have the opposite of problems. I know it sounds funny but a tw can keep up with an xr on the trails. Just takes a Good rider :D

Just put the 241 on my 07 and love it. Don't feel any extra weight at all. Haven't had it off road yet but I feel much more confident on the pavement, just seems to stick like glue. Know it's going to be even better off road.

Hey Norcal,

Welcome to the forum!

I like your XR400. That is probably one of my all time favorite bikes. I've had four of them and would love to have another one if they only had that magic button. Is that a CR front end you've got on yours?

Where are you located? We've got a pretty good group of NorCal TW nutjobs that won't discriminate against your Honda in case your wife won't let you borrow hers ;) !

Further Newbie Questions

I'm another Newbie. Got a 2013 last fall, but it's been winter here so just got on the bike again a week or so ago.

A couple of questions regarding this thread: 1) I've not notice any problems with the stock tire, but then I probably wouldn't, being new and also not having a comparison. What makes it "unsafe"? 2) The Shinko 244 seems well thought-of around here. I will be riding on pavement some, gravel some (necessary to get to my house), and a little moderate off-road. I see on ProCycle that in the 244 there's a 4.60-18 and a 5.10-18. What are the relative merits? I would think I'd want the wider of the two.

PS: I was one of those "Brown Santas" for 32 years. It was hard work but a good job.

hey ghdave... from my research most people reckon the stock front is sketchy and unpredictable... i have only ridden this bike on the street thus far... getting it sorted... i don t have an opinion yet on the stock front since i haven t ridden enough on the bike... i was gonna do the 244 / 5.10 for my missus but i was afraid of the weight... if i did the 244 i was going to check out the 4.6... i run an mt43 on the rear of my xr4 and i love trials tires... after some reading here (thanks lzrd brth :)) and i saw a thread on the 241... weight isn t terrible, reports are good and the price is right !!

good luck with ya bike !!

I didn't think the stock front tire was too bad either... Until I put the 244 on there. It does steer a little heavier than the stocker but it grips a hunderd times better on AND ESPECIALLY off road.

I also was questioning what was so bad about the stock front tire until i took it offroad. It does fine straight line but always tended to slide out due to lack of knobs on the sidewall i suppose. I also went with the 241 and love it. very sticky and I feel alot more confident offroad.

The pic is a little decieving. It is very close to the factory size. I did go with the 4.60 x 18 probally an inch taller.ps lots of info in the sticky for front tires in performance and customization. Page 9 or 10 has more info on the 241.
thanks for the photo saabbug... i was wondering about the size diff... 1 - 1 1/2 inches taller ??
