Hello, I recently purchased a 1987 TW200. It has only 4300 miles and is in great condition. The only issues are that the speedo only goes up to about 12 mph and sticks there. Also it seems very cold blooded. It takes a long time running with the choke on (very high idle) until it will run well. Of course that could be because it is only 35 degrees here today! Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated! The bike is completely stock.

Thanks.

The speedo gears are probably gummed up something nasty like mine were. Try taking the wheel off, taking the brake drum apart, and soaking the gears where the speedo cable comes into the assembly with some penetrating lube like PB Blaster or similar.

Welcome and good luck!

Welcome. Sounds like your low speed carb tune is too lean. That's an OEM condition for North American models due to treehugger regulations, but easily curable with a twist of the pilot screw. Could also be caused by a cruddy carb.

+1 on a dirty carb, that many miles on a 25 year old bike chances are that the carb it a bit dirty. Worth looking into anyway. I ordered a float bowl gasket and 4 new screws and a needle valve kit for like 25$ from cycle parts warehouse. It was money well spent, I could barely get the needle sleeve out and when I did the filter at the top was plugged pretty good!

Good luck!

Welcome to the world of TW. It is a close knit community. Most on here will tell you that their TW is the second or third bike. I will tell you it is my #1 bike. My BMW R1100R is my #2 bike.
