OK so i got a tdub a month back not running, cleaned it up, and fully rebuilt the carb. got it to barely idle it was smoking a little (valve seals) so i tore it down and did a full rebuild on the motor new rings gaskets valve seals honed the cyl ETC...... got it back together its doing the same thing it will barely idle and it sputters and dies when i touch the gas i know its not the carb i tore it apart 6 times cleaned it blew the passages jets etc... its spotless. still keeps doing this including firing when the valves are open and blowing back through the carb ( the timing is spot on and so are the valves).

I checked the ohms on the stator and pickup, and pulser coil and all are in factory spec, heres the interesting thing it dosent stop firing, as in it constantly is sending voltage to the coil and is firing on the down stroke it never stops firing.
im assuming its the CDI unit.

if its the cdi i already spent all my cash refurbing the engine to top shape and i cant afford a $200 cdi i will probally part it out on the classifieds of the form.

My question is: how do i test the cdi? and is it possible to build one from scratch? I was excited to get this bike going looked like it was going to be an excelent little trail bike

static would be pretty easy to make for less than $20 i really like the programmable one it really seems worth the cash. I hate yamaha electronics they allways seem to fail somehow.

Oh and a quick update. I took my cdi apart it took a few hours to strip the silicone rubber stuff off. Then (here comes the good part) I boiled it in water for roughly 15 min on as high as my stove would go. it now works, for how long i have no idea.

it worked for about an hour then started going downhill again. I got the idea from Repairing PS3's when they conk out you take a heat gun and get the circuit board nice and hot it resets them.

Try a cdi unit from a mates bike.I have 2 x 1992 models and exactly the same problem on the one.The faulty bike would start and idle but as soon as you gave it gas ,it would burp, bog and drive me insane.Cleaned carb out 3 times and swopped carb out with same result .swopped cdi unit and runs like a dream.NOW EXPLAIN THIS ,I put the faulty cdi unit in donor bike along with faulty carb and it runs better than first faulty bike.ENOUGH TO drive you to drink.
