First off, I'll say I've ready the Sticky's... several times. They are great, and my hats off to the guys for making those!

Perhaps my reading for comprehension isn't up to snuff. I can't figure out what size the 'homemade tool' (nut) needs to be to remove the damper rode. I read 'it is a 19mm'. What is? The socket? the size of the nut used? I've also read to use a '12mm'. A 12 mm nut didn't work for me - way too small.

Help would be greatly appreciated! Currently at a standstill with my rebuild.

If I remember correctly I used 3/4" hex stock. A 3/4" nut on some all-thread with either a 90 deg. bend or a T-handle welded on should do the trick.
