Went for a nice ride today to test if carb problem returns once bike is hot. Bike ran great at first but 15 minutes in or so bike started running poor at low RPMs. After getting tangled in a tree @ ~1:40 in the video bike would not start and best result can be heard at 1:45.
I ended up hiking home and retrieving Betty Boop with my truck.

This is a return of the same problem I had in Moab that was cured with a same model year TW's carb loaned by Plumbstraight. Odd.

EDIT: Bike really was not hot, just thoroughly warmed up. New plug, sonic cleaned carb, newly replaced OEM 128 main jet, fresh gas. Float level has not been checked.

Good advice Twilight. I'll pull, inspect and maybe polish needle with 600 grit or so tomorrow. Bike sounded great before with Randall's carb so I am extremely confident it is something in the carb. Randall's carb made the bike sound like this:

Well,maybe I was just imagining the reggae in the background.:walk:

Fred, don't waste your time and effort trying to polish that Needle Valve Assy. A new one, complete, is less than $ 15.00.Remove any doubt...and install a new Needle Valve Assy.
TWlight, you don't understand Fred. He is going to make that bike run like a banshee. He is the kind of fellow that makes his sandals from worn out tires. He can fix anything. I am sure though that after the many miles of his style of riding, he most likely needs to put his gascap on a new bike. Words meant in good spirits Fred. Give Betty a hug, she needs it.

I like elime's idea of a backup carb. I actually bought one of those $26 Chinese carbs to use in a "just in case moment". At the time, I was having problems with mine but with the help from jbfla it turned out to be the needle valve seat o-ring. Since I got it fixed, the Chinese carb has sat unused on my shelf in brand new condition. There are some modifications which need to be done with the throttle cable and both ends of the carb connection boots. There are a few members who've done the necessary modifications to make this carb work. Forum member cccan has successfully done this and posted this info in the forum.

If you are willing to make these modifications you are welcome to my $26 Chinese Carb.

The ride looked pretty up until what I refer to as "the walk of shame"! On Monday, I had a "walk of shame" incident but I'm waiting to officially report it when I have the incident resolved. Anyway, the carb is yours if you want it!

When you finally got it restarted it almost sounded like it was flooded.

In addition to what TWlight mentioned i would check the float height and also check the float and make sure it does not have a pinhole leak in it where it might be filling with fuel.

Fred (the one that rides like a Banshee, and painted his bike KTM colors, so other riders on the trails would just assume it is another broken down KTM strewn along the dusty trails of America, and not blame it on a trusty TW200.
YEEEOOWW!! What a thing to say! I damn near blew coffee out my nose laughing! :p You could hurt a guy... (The inside of the nose anyway.) m.

I like the spare carb idea. However the modifications needed to accommodate the $26 China Carb seem undesirable. So thank you very much Admiral but no thank you at this point in time. Appreciate everyone's input though....thanks Folks

Yeah Adam , I fear I must cancel our planned exploration ride to the Carson River Hot Springs and Leviathan Mine (old abandoned copper sulfate mine) for this weekend. Sorry. Go on your own or we'll go camp-n-ride together once Betty is healthy again.

One other possibility, which happened to me, is that the needle is very slightly bent. Won't matter much at WOT, but at mid-throttle it might. I learned to be REAL careful when re-assembling the needle and diaphragm with the carb still on the bike. :mad::p

All good advice. However Betty Boop seems to be happily gobbling up the trails again.:p
Reverse engineered attempt #1 spring worked for a bit keeping needle reseated. However yesterday's longer ride ended with the spring coils spreading and actually jamming needle partially open as the prototype's coils had partially slid around edge of needle's cir clip.
Today prototype spring #2 is much stiffer, slightly smaller, and seems to restore needle to fully seated position with some authority. A sixteen mile trail ride through varied terrain and speeds resulted in no bad behavior.

I would buy that in a heartbeat if I owned an older model TW! Rebuild it and set it aside for later use.

Betty has "Gone Down" on more than a few occasions, but she always seems to bounce back :eek:
