Just curious, being a complete and utter newbie, how many miles I can expect out of one. That is if maintenance is done on schedule and the gods are kind how long will one go? At some point I am sure things just wear to the point it makes sense to get new but is 25k unreasonable? That would give me 5 years at 5k a year.

I only have about 3500 on my 2010 I bought new last year. But I would say you can expect way more than 25,000 if you keep up with the maintenance. Some here have 50,000+ on theirs.

Just around 5500 on mine over the course of about 2 years of riding....still rides like a brand new bike. These motors are so simple and have been around for so long, as long as you keep up on the maintenance (not that there's much to do) I don't really see any problems meeting your goals.

48,xxx on the original top end. Other than clutch fibers wiped out by a fuel saving auto oil, only normal wear and tune items replaced.

Use the proper lubricants for a motorcycle with a combined sump and a wet clutch, stay on the maintenance, and ride it with respect, and there is no telling how far one will go.

Thanks so much everyone. That's very encouraging. I am amazed seeing the used bikes with next to no miles. I am going to pick one up shortly and I fully expect it to accumulate the miles.

I don't ride much lately. Just moved into a new house close enough to walk to work. Where I live is too far from any good dualsport riding, so I'm letting Tdub's tag and insurance expire next month and putting her in storage. I'll continue collecting parts for her ground-up overhaul, after which she'll be a bored and stroked (268cc), ported and polished, custom exhaust and airbox, 6-speed (XT guts), extended swingarm, , ..., etc. She'll be all LED, including a 7-inch round headlight and offroad floodlights.

Bought my 2010 new in July 2011. Since then I had exactly 9 days (2 due to hurricane and 7 days I went on vacation) where I did not ride her. Have now 5876 miles on it, no problems so far, just lots and lots of fun.

Just got a TW after a 30+ year hiatus as well. It's currently in pieces being modded up.

Just over 11,000 miles without needing valves adjusted and just put a new plug in today. I think the new plug gave it a little boost in power, but the original one I took out looked fine. Not a single problem with the bike after 4 years of trail and road riding. Only parts replaced so far are fork boots, front tire, and head light bulb. It's a 2008. It will now spend most of its time on the trails since I have upgraded to a 2010 FZ6R for the road.
