Just that? I was reading about the DR-Z 400SM and they mentioned that many other bikes need frequent valve jobs or checking? I didn't see anything about that in the owners manual for the TW200 and I'm wondering what your experiences are.

Owners manual, page 6-3, 6000km, 3728 miles.

Thanks, I looked there first, but somehow missed it.

I guess that isn't too terrible. It looks like it takes over an hour to pull off, and I'm not looking for that kind of maintainence. I don't mind paying for it, but I expect that will be a 3 month service. No big deal.

I read some other models that were calling for 10 hour checks, and that's too high performance for me!

There is a big difference as far as valve adjusting goes between the TW200 and DRZ400S. The TW has screw type adjusters, the DRZ has shim under bucket adjusters. The DRZ will not need adjustment near as oftyen, but when it does, you must remove the camshafts to remove the valve buckets to remove the shims. Then you must measure the thickness of that shim and decide what shim you will need to bring the adjustment to where you want it to be. Locate or order any shims you need. Install, assemble and remeasure. Finish assembly and do again next time. NO THANKS!!

On the TW (going by what I did to adjust the valves on an XT225 I owned), you remove the fuel tank, remove the small covers over the valve adjusters, measure. If it needs adjustment you loosen the lock screw, adjust the valve and retighten the lock nut and recheck. Of course all adjusting on these bikes you must locate top dead center (an easy process). I bet you could check and adjust the TW in an hour even the first time you try it. Less after that. The DRZ400S, I would guess at least three hours the first time with lots of stress.

Valve adjustment is 14 minutes, start to finish, once you get the hang of it.

1 Remove seat

1 Remove tank

1 Remove rocker covers

2 Remove crank bolt and timing mark covers

1 Align timing

2 Adjust intake

2 Adjust exhaust

2 Replace all covers

1 Replace tank'

1 Replace seat

Of course, it was an ancient pushrod engine design.

HEY! I have four of those 'other' bikes that are all "ancient pushrod engine design"!

As for the maintenance time involved . . . it's kinda' like date night for me . . . a little music, a little touch, some conversation, some forplay, some serious gettin' busy, then some slow cleaning her up and tucking her in . . . and then I go to sleep!

Priceless.
