My son Mike sent me this video of our pond froze over. I’ve often wondered how thick ice needs to be before you can drive a car on it. I figure one of you nothern guys can answer my question.

What Dryden posted is the standard and good info however ice formation is a rather sketchy condition. My local lake has about 8 inches right now where I normally fish but just a few hundred yards further out there is only 4 inches and in some spots where the currents flow or springs are present there could be less. I am a hard water fishing nut case but not nuts with my life, gear and certainly not with any vehicle. Lakes around here in southern NY just do not freeze uniformly enough to have vehicles larger than ATVs and snowmobiles on them.
