Spotted this on the local CraigsList today



How is it that someone buys a bike and then doesn't even put 10 miles on it??!!

I puzzle over the TW's some of you have picked up that have only a couple of hundred miles on them, but this is just crazy!! I really have to wonder what the stories are behind these bikes. Heck... I'd have a hundred miles or more on the thing in the first few days of owning it!

Don't try to figure out the logic of a seller who thinks he's gonna be able to sell his used (6.4 miles, but still USED) bike for more than a dealership would sell a new one!

Oh yes, the selling price is another mystery to be sure. What I gotta wonder though is who buys something like that and then never uses it!



Of course I'm still wondering why my wife buys clothes, puts them in the closet with the tags still on them, and a year or two later donates them to Goodwill or the like unworn with the tags still on them!

We all know stories of someone's spouse or someone's friend who got a bike, scared the begeezus out of themselves on their first ride and walked away. I'd guess that while many experienced riders are refining their rides by incorporating a TW into their stable, and equal percentage of true noobs are tempted by the TW's price, weight, low profile, and less threatening stature. Some percentage of the later group are going to ride a bit (whether a dozen or 300 mile) and then park the bike only to be sold down the road. My 2002 was bought in 2007 with 300 or so miles on it. No story available other than it was owned by an older guy who decided it wasn't for him.

I agree that dealers sometimes will sell things for used that are really new. In former decades outdoors shops had to dust up the Kelty backpacks and call them used to sell them below what Mr. Kelty considered suggested retail. I bought some of that supposedly used stuff at great prices. Good deals are there to be had, but not all bikes are what they seem. I've got a couple of pairs of hiking boots with low miles that I would sell really cheap. Cheers. Tom

Some years ago I designed a custom Harley Fatboy that was if I do say so a stunner.The guy who bought it stated he wanted no gas in the tank and the battery not be charged but the engine pickled and filled with oil. Turns out it was going to be placed in his living room under a clear plastic case! He had no intent of ever riding a motorcycle but wanted a custom Harley to show off at his home. I wonder if he ever sold it?

Tow. This happens a lot with people who buy travel trailers. They really don't understand towing and the dealers tell them anything to sell the trailer. The first ride they are terrified and it sits. I've helped out many in this situation. OM

The guy I got my TW from used to ride bikes with his kids and all of them got away from it while the kids were raising their families. When the kids (in their 40's) bought bikes and started riding again ol dad bought the TW and they did a 300 mile ride in Michigan's upper penninsula. Dad crashed a couple of times and his 70 year old body didn't take it so well. He kept the bike for a while but never rode it again and put it on Craigs list where I saw it.



Now it's me that's the old guy.....weird....

Low mileage bikes that are a few years old are what to look for rather than a new one at the dealer.

The money saved will easily offset the cost of a new rack, a good skid plate, a bigger tank, an up graded chain and sprocket, better tires, etc. etc.

Be patient and act fast when you find it.

You will be happier in the long run.
