Good eye. I'm thinking low miles and long storgae outdoors? No, not exactly safe. They won't get any better with time.

My 98 was worse than that as far as dry rot cracks at 4900 miles. I wasnt to worried about it since they are tubed and i wasnt highway riding. I put new ones on this time last year. Definitely a good idea to change them but i rode mine 600-700 miles with no problems but you never know. The tubes still looked good but i changed them and keep them for backup on trips.

I have a used 01 also, my front tire was doing the same thing and I ride mostly street, swapped 'em out around 4000 miles. The guy who had it before me just bought it to learn how to ride on, only put 1100 miles on it. Just dry rotting from lack of use. Get yourself a new set so you won't always be thinking "what if" while riding....

If you have glass windows that let sun through that strikes Aluminum or Zinc you have created an

OZONE generator. Rubber is not happy with Ozone.

Sometimes you would get a wiff of "that electrical smell" (not burny one) that's ozone.

Tires are a good investment, I bought the Maxiss and love'em. If you do upgrade the size and aggressive traction you will be happy on and offroad. I had to replace the chain (and sprockets)and after the rear was installed I had a 1/4" at the A arm!!!Buy the extra long chain and have links to spare!

Lucky for me a generous member here sent me his extra links and I put them in,he saved me money I didn't have!!! Just a great group of Tdubbers here
