Input on my 1987 TW purchase

Hello Hello

I'm new here. Here's a little of my back story. I've ridden dual sports pretty much all my life. Had a 2003 TW a few years back and hated it. Just couldn't get over the idea of the huge tires for some reason. Got rid of it and got a XT250. Also had a XT225 in past. Never rode the 250 much and went searching for another bike. Finally came to my senses and picked up a new 2023 TW. Been riding and enjoying it for a couple of months now. Wanted to get another for the wife to ride and found an 87 for what I thought was a good deal. Picked it up for $1700 with a rack and rifle scabbard. It has 2040 miles and needs a few minor things - new battery, clutch lever and a new gasket to fix the leaking carb. Think it's kinda cool to have a first year and last year TW. And the kickstart on the 87 sure is nice to have.

How do you think I did on the 87? Underpaid? Overpaid? Thoughts on work needed to do on it?

Thanks so much!

From the pics and description, I think you did very well!
I have an 87 that has been trouble free for a couple thousand miles now.
I would add a Ricochet or similar bash plate to protect that left side engine cover from damage, they are No Longer Available from Yamaha, and getting rare on EBay and other places.
Enjoy!

Welcome to the site.
First - It really does not mean anything of what any of us think - Even though we all are
All-knowing! 😁 🙃
The only thing that matters is - If you are happy with the purchase, then, hell ya it was a good deal! 😎

The only thing I thought was a little odd was the comment on having a 2003 and "hated it". Never seen anyone say they hated a TDub. But you must have gotten over it and come back around two-fold. The only thing better than having a TW - Is having TWO of them! 😉

I would say you got it for a great price, and it looks like it's in nice condition. Here in PA, it seems like everyone's asking $3,000 for older TW's.

I'm perplexed, why did you hate the 2003? It's literally the SAME bike as your new one from a riding perspective. The same.

Do tell.

No doubt that the 2003 was identical to the 2023 and 1987 that I now have.

The story is that I had just come from riding the big XR650L, trying to make it work on tight, steep, rooty, rocky and slippery trails. Being that I'm 5'8" and couldn't hardly touch the damn ground, even with a lowering link and lower seat, along with the heavy weight, it didn't work out too well. My search was on for a small, light and nimble trail bike. Problem was, I hadn't realized my issue was the seat height yet. So in my mind, watching all the Youtube videos of guys ripping through trails on 250cc two strokes, I thought I needed something similar; and the TW was not that kind of bike.

For whatever reason, I thought that the fat tires on the TW made it exactly the bike that I didn't want. I tried a few 250cc bikes, not the least of which was the XT250. That bike was better for seat height, but still not great on the trails - at least not for me. I then realized that I needed a short seat height and a very short first gear. I searched and researched to no end to find that bike. I nearly settled on the new Honda Trail 90 or a smaller CRF, KLX or similar 125cc bike. As I couldn't really find what I was looking for, I picked up the '03 TW on a whim. The bike actually worked pretty well on the few trail rides I went on. But I didn't give it enough time nor a fair shake. I couldn't accept it for not being the fast, powerful bikes I've been watching rip up the same trails on Youtube.

It didn't help matters that it had a DG exhaust that was ear piercingly loud and a rear rack that I thought was ugly. The bike reminded me of the old Big Wheel bikes from the 80s. I rode one a few times and didn't like the way it felt in the corners. I remembered it not handling nearly as well as my old XR100 and I didn't like it.

After letting the trailbike situation sit for awhile and then coming back to it, I decided that maybe the TW was the best trailbike for me and decided to put my preconceived bias aside and try it again. I picked up a new 23 TW and haven't looked back since.

Like most things in life - Doesn't really matter how you get there in the end, just so you get there.

It's a shame you got rid of the 03. Everyone knows they were the fastest and best looking Dub ever made. That said glad your back with your first and last.

Haha. Good point! Guess I'll have to add an '03 to the garage too. Don't tell the wife!

Some may say that, but that is only because they secretly know and want 2004, which are the real deal! 😁

Hmmmm..Perhaps but if you install Walmart flame decals next to the tank rondels on an 03 there is at least an 10 MHP gain on the top and 8 MHP in the mid-range. This as been proven to work only on 03 models.o_O

Me, Little Tommy, and other true TW cognoscenti know that the 87 was the fastest model year!
