I was cleaning my bike and I pulled my starter motor out just to check it out and see what it looks like. There is some oily crud in there. Should the starter motor be dry? I'm assuming it should be, but I thought I'd ask because I want to be sure.

Oily crud as in overall, or only at the bearings?

There should be seal on the end. If it goes bad motor oil could leak into the starter and soak the windings, which will eventually degrade or short the starter.

Overall, by the brushes mostly. Seal looks good, but 21 years does take its toll. I'll clean it up and get a new seal.

21 year old starter, you might as well replace the brushes while you have it apart. Might even improve your starting torque.

Good call. One of the brushes is visually worn down. I'll order a set. They are cheap enough and easy to install.
