I figure it's about time to "show off" my daily rider... it's an '87 that I bought for $200 in sad shape a few years back. It's been on the road since the spring of 2011 in this form, I keep saying I'm going to tear it down and make it pretty, but it's just so reliable and fun that I can't bring myself to disassemble it. I've had several other TWs and other bikes in general, but wanted a fun toy for around-town riding. I normally ride it 10 or 15 miles a day here in Colorado Springs, and really enjoy it. I now have right around $500 in it, and that's counting a brand new CDI box.



Pretty much a bone-stock bike other than the obvious cosmetic modifications. I built the seat, a buddy and I built the under-seat exhaust, and of course the fuel tank required custom mounts. I do not run turn signals or gauges, and run both the headlight and LED brake/taillight off AC power (there is NO battery, capacitor, etc).

any modifications necessary to fit that CB tank?

Yes, both the tank and the frame had to be modified. I made a small plate and welded it to the bottom of the tank to allow for the use of a Yamaha fuel petcock (instead of the leaky, dual-outlet Honda unit), and the frame required new mounts for both the front and rear of the tank. As a bonus, the "tunnel" of the tank is large enough to allow mounting the CDI and voltage regulator up there instead of under the seat, allowing for a cleaner look.

Nah, it's a Honda-ha

The Hella is a bit bright and of course does not have a high/low beam. I just run the voltage a bit low and also keep it aimed down a bit.



I was a bit worried about the muffler being so close to the seat, but it hasn't caused any issues whatsoever. It definitely does not make the seating surface any warmer than normal, and I see no signs of abnormal heat on the bottom side of the seat either.

Yes, a bit more padding on the seat might be in order. Just enough to get it even with the back of the gas tank.



Speaking of the tank, I really like the way that looks on your bike. I think I'm old, but that longer flatter (can I call it old style or retro?) look appeals to me.
