In TW-related news: we got the title transfer taken care of today! First day we could get both wifey and myself down to the office to sign stuff. Now we have WA plates.

Which reminds me... need to insure the little bugger now. Should be cheap. My moto rates even on bigger bikes are cheap through State Farm, and the TW being under 200cc should make it a pittance.

I also read all 28 pages of the front tire thread. I think, even though the OE front only has 806 miles on it, it will get proactively changed. We're on gravel, grass, dirt, and mud here. Really don't want a front end that's prone to washout when wifey is trying to learn. I want her to have fun on a confidence-inspiring ride. Don't care about mileage, so gonna get one of the trials tires. This bike will see a lot more hours off-pavement at low speeds than racking up mileage on-pavement. Leaning toward the Pirelli MT43 just because I have experience with Pirelli and like their tires. And $75 just ain't that much money (shipped, from motorcyclesuperstore.com).

Hi all,

Just an introduction post. Just bought a new-to-us 2013 TW from a nice retired fellow in Hood River, Oregon. Has 800 miles on it, never been down, unmodified, unmolested. Not the cheapest TW on the market, but cheaper than new, and this one is already broke in. ;-)

We live just north of the Columbia River in Washington on about 600 acres. Beautiful place to hike, shoot, and ride.

Picked up the bike for my wife to learn on... and of course I'll have fun poking around our property on it!

I have a Cagiva Gran Canyon and an unused CBR600RR trackbike project (was a salvage recovery... I was familiar with how it was "totaled" and it was too good a deal to pass up). Used to have a 2001 Ducati 900SS. Beautiful red and white, with carbon fender/hugger... it looked like one of Ducati's "R" bikes, but much less expensive. Anyway, learned to ride on a 73 Honda CL175 as a teen.

Wifey has always enjoyed riding pillion with me, but wasn't into the idea of riding herself until recently. She expressed interest in learning to ride so we talked about some options. Did a little shopping around, tried on a few bikes for size. She really liked this little TW. I think it'll be perfect. She can flat foot it, it's got a super easy clutch, not too much power. Fun and friendly. With acres to play on and no traffic to deal with, we have a great place to learn, too!

Funny enough, first used one we found the seller backed out and decided to keep it! Too much fun. Found this one shortly after; same year, same price, but even lower mileage and a little cleaner. Also closer to us! That's something of a miracle when you live in the middle of nowhere. Everything else for sale was at least 2 hours drive each way.

Anyway, the seller that decided to keep his directed me to this forum. Already spent some hours reading technical info. The oil change thread was very helpful! Not looking for much in the way of mods at the moment, but when the time comes, there seems to be lots of good info. All I will do for now is take off the turn signals and rear license plate mount to protect them while the learning happens, and get some decent handguards to protect things in the event of a tipover. "Oops" happens. Doesn't have to hurt anything. ;-)

Looking forward to learning and sharing as we get some time and experience with this neat little moto!

Glad you found another bike. I am the guy who was thinking about selling mine but changed my mind on you last minute because they really are too much fun. It really is too fun to sell. I was considering it because I want a bigger bike like a KLR 650 but decided to wait until I can have both so my wife can keep riding the TW. Glad you found the forum.

LOL, my apologies......... Leaning toward the Pirelli MT43 just because I have experience with Pirelli and like their tires. .....

There isn't much difference between the MT 43 and the 241. The 241 is just a little bit more rounded (and $10 cheaper). I doubt most folks could tell one from the other in a blind test. (that doesn't mean riding blinded!! )

Sounds like fun! Is there a specific subforum for ride arranging I should watch, or a PNW regional forum where you would arrange this?

Aaaaand... the 2-valvers ain't so bad. Worst part on the Cag is you have to halfway disassemble the bike to get to the rear head. My 900SS was a peach, though.

Speaking of valves, the TW looks pretty easy to get to. Need to get into the technical forum and see what's what with this little single. Is there an official Yamaha shop manual that can be ordered somewhere? I do most of my own wrenching. On the cars, only time I have someone else do the work is if it would take me more than one weekend and I need the rig right away. Motos are rarely to never that critical, so I do pretty much everything myself. Might take a while, but I get it done.

Just gotta give y'all some grief... been browsing the technical archives. You guys have introduced me to the crack dealer that is ProCycle. For a mod addict like myself, this is going to become expensive.

New ideas:
Front 20% springs
Rear spring
EBC pads
Galfer stainless braided brake line
Front fender relocator

Future ideas:
Rear pipe
Carb jet kit
UNI air filter
LED blinkers
LED taillight

All this on top of the Shinko that's on the way for the front, the handguards, the footpegs, and the bash plate I want to order soon. Also want the CycleRack, but not sure if that will be a "now" or "later".

The Cagiva has become more of a project than a rider, so my wife and I are thinking of selling it. She's encouraging me to goof around on the TW this summer, and if other bikes go away she has no problem with me unleashing the mod bug on the T-dub. All in all, it's still one of my least expensive hobbies. Cars aren't cheap and flying is even worse! Hey, at least I don't have enough money for drugs, right?

But yeah, darn y'all for your "helpful" technical posts. So many ideas now...

Here's another one: Ride it for two years and 5,000 miles and then decide.
The Shinko is more important than any of the other stuff, except maybe larger footpegs....those can really save your shins. It's just too easy to slip off the stock ones in the rough.

If you like your wife ditch the OEM front tire ASAP and get a Shinko 241! It will reduce the chances of a front end washout by several hundred percent.

I wonder who that nice retired fellow was.....I lived in Hood River until 2006.

What’s the difference between the Shinko 241 and 244?
