Please join me in prayer for our dear brother Gerry. He has evacuated town, but doesn't know if his home will be there when he can come back. He said it was a bit scary getting out of town with fire on both sides of the road. A Personal Message to him or a post here of encouragement and support might be appreciated.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Please be with Gerry and Sashka, protect them, encourage them and be with them through this. Amen.

Another fire, The Camp Fire, started 6.30am near the city of Paradise, Calif. The city that our Gerry lives in. I'm sure he has been evacuated. I've heard 1000 homes have been destroyed. The wind is blowing so hard they can't fight it. The entire city of Paradise has been evacuated. High winds predicted for tonight and tomorrow. This is going to be very bad! We are praying for you Gerry. If you read this Gerry, your welcome to over winter here. Dirts a Flyen SanDue

I just read that AP is reporting according to a Cal Fire Captain, Paradise is pretty much distroyed. It has been burning at the rate of 80 acres per minute. Many people have not been accounted for. This is a very devastating fire.

UPDATE: Gerry and Sashka do not have internet service right now, but will log on and let us know what's going on when they know more. They are pretty sure the house is gone, but at least they are safe. They are staying with friends in Oroville.

We have been staying with Friends in the Oroville. Internet and cell service and cable has been down for the last 8 hours so most of you knew more about what was going on than us. Very, very scary. All roads, virtual gridlock and three miles took 3 hours all lanes oneway out of town. Official incomming equipment used sidewalks and front yards. We awoke to an ominous sky and chunks of chard bark on our driveway. Many loud explosions suggested that something was seriously amiss. My Ranger pickup had been setup with bedding and pet crates since early June. Important documents had long since been packaged and positioned at the ready.

Am using a borrowed laptop and right now do not seem to have the patience to get this done. Long and short, Saskia,I, our 3 dogs and one of our 2 cats are FINE. Important papers saved. All else, lost. We awoke to an ominous sky, explosions and falling chunks of chard barks. 45 minutes we had pets and papers secured and moving ever so slowly out of danger. That drive included a very frightening passage through areas of burning homes and trees. The heat could be felt in while driving and clearly, cars that had to stop for any "extended" period burst into flames. Visibility and many instances was very limited. Appreciate your expressions of concern. I was so comforted in seeing that in spite of the risks, folks were always willing to stop and let side traffic into the stream. Everyone was courteous and showed concern for others. Take care, be prepared and never wait to evacuate. Gerry

Hopefully people will heed the advice of the authorities and evacuate early, rather than wait until the last minute. And especially hope the first responders and other emergency workers stay safe. Some of them are losing their homes while they work to save others.

The folks we are staying have adult children that work as 'First Responders'. We have gotten pictures of both our houses. As with most Paradise residents, both houses completely burned. Odd, as with everyone, we no longer have homes, we no longer have a town. Certainly the land remains, but our stores, Dr./Dental/vet office's, gone. Our current conversations often include references to what I can do to help others; Reality is, right now, knowledge and wit remains, but all implements are gone. Suspect things like wrenches, sockets, many other metal tools will still have enough temper to remain usable. Thanks, you all take care. Gerry

I suspect the details of this tragedy will only be known in the future – till then, the one thing that cannot be replaced is life

Glad to know you’re safe Gerry – thanks for getting in touch ….
