It turns out that dogs know physics. They also have perfect pitch. They will hear an approaching motorcycle and begin calculating closing angle and velocity based on Doppler effect of the pitch. If you can't do a U turn next time, do this: roll off just as the dog takes off on his calculated closing angle. He gets to his calculated interception point and gets confused 'cause you aren't there yet. Then do wot and blow past him.
Oh there are lots of ways to handle these incidents, trust me I've been riding for 50 years. Unfortunately each situation is different. Once I was with 2 other riders... I was 3rd in line and a dog had come out to the road after the first guy, barely missed grabbing the second guy's leg when he went by and was out in the middle of the road just waiting for me.
Well, since I saw him go for the leg I figured that was his MO, so when he went for mine he got my foot in his head and went rolling. I HATED to kick him, would have preferred to kick the owner, but at that point it was him or me.
