I bought some rare earth magnets at Lowe's

Cut some notches in them to fit inside the drain plug -- they're very very hard material

And glued them in place using Marine Tex but JB Weld should work just fine.

Just for everyone's info that plans to have a crack at something like this...a lot of non rare-earth magnets loose their magnetism when they get hot. Even a lot of rare-earths lose their mojo until they cool down again.
Yep! And you should see all the fine metal shavings on the magnet when I change the oil. It is a bit of a challenge to wipe it off.
