I set my trip meter and use it as a gas gauge. I just turned 2000 mi on an 03 TW. Just filled it and according to the math it's getting 50mpg. I know something is not right. I do weigh a bit, 270, and when going to town hit the freeway at 60mph if the wind is not blowing into my face. I dropped the rear sprocket a few teeth and low is what 2nd use to be and 5th is like an overdrive. Mostly run 25-45 so what should I look into. I am about 75ft above sealevel.

With stock gearing (14/50) on an 05 and about your weight, I checked my mpg yesterday with mostly highway use this time 55-60mph = 56mpg, which is what I normally get with mostly highway use. When I ride the FS logging roads (15-25 mph), I usually get around 75 mpg, but I ain't been in the woods much this year...yet!

I also am averaging around 50mpg and I weigh roughly the same as you do. I'm guessing that this may be the normal for those of our stature :)

I agree with Admiral and Uwdlk2no2. I weigh about the same and I've always got about the same mileage. I believe "dropping a few teeth" as you say could actually lower your mileage considering the load and engine size. Maybe 1 tooth would increase mileage with your weight. If you were 100 pounds lighter, dropping 2 or 3 teeth would get you better mileage and still have enough power. I went 4 teeth larger (54), I like the lower end but its pretty buzzy at 55mph. Next time I'll put a 53 on instead.

Both of my TW's used to get around 55 mpg. Both developed the cylinder base gasket leak so when I took them apart to fix that I installed new rings and lapped the valves in both bikes. Now they both get mid 60's mpg.

I wish I had done a compression test prior to doing the work but I didn't. BTW, one bike is 14t/50t and the other is 14t/55t.

Well, I can finally add something here! I just finished my first tank, and after filling up, my mileage was 76 mpg. My commute to work is 18.5 miles, with a max speed of 45 mph. I have a couple of good long stretches cruising at 35 and 45 mph. I'm 6 ft, 220 lbs!

I'm not twisting the throttle hard either! I know, kinda boring!
