Hitting anything above the size of an ant while on a motorsickle is potentially deadly.

Humbling stuff. My dying wish is to be taken out by a wombat or something less pedestrian than a dog, a quail or a grasshopper.

Seriously, how many epitaphs in this country contain the werd "wombat"?

I rest my case.

I think we've all had our dogs get out from time to time, but there are people around here who barely even try to keep them contained. Animal control is not a lot of help either. If I get it by a loose dog, I hope my wife and kids take everything the dog owners posses and then some. It's grossly irresponsible, to the dog, to the family's kids that probably love the dog and to us as motorcyclists.

Also, regardless of how I die, I want my epitaph to read, "I told you I was sick!" Although death by wombat would be hard to beat.

I have a good friend since high school. He says his epitaph will read: " Here lies the body of Peter ( last name ). For Pete's sake, get off my back ". Kind of catchy, and he probably will have it done.

If you drive one of these, you won't have to worry about it. It is specifically designed to deal with the quadrupedal marsupial that you speak of:

Back to topic.
That is very sad to hear about the poor 33 year old. In the rural areas we ride in I worry about dogs quite a bit. We have been chased a few times but so far no contact has been made. It would not take much to really have a disaster.

Collective opinions on effective ways to deal with dogs?
Agressive
Vs.
Just chasing (how do u know the difference?

Im guessing throttle is best.
Then bear spray(mounted sideways on handlebars?) Also good for bears.
I always have a pistol, but its not readily accessible when im riding. Easy fix: serpa holster.
Id hate to kill a dog for doing what comes naturally, BUT when that behavior puts my life/limbs in jeopardy: justified.

Any other/better ideas?

How many epitaphs in this country contain the word "werd"?

No offense meant; just tuggin' on your chain.

This was actually covered in the msf course. They said slow down, then as the dog approaches gas it. Makes the dog take a bad angle on you. I've been chased by a few dogs, and it works... if you see them coming soon enough.

Poor guy. Really feel for his family. I'm a firm believer in ATGATT and dogs are far down on my list of concerns that reinforce that belief.

+1.

I think attempting to discharge a firearm from a motorcycle at speed = bad idea. Actions like that putting others life/limbs in jeopardy: not justified.

It is a shame about the fellow. Out west you have to watch for a lot of animals. They can be anywhere and dart out in front of you. I was headed west on highway 2 in Montana this summer doing the speed limit of 70 on a two lane. The biggest hog I have ever seen came up out of a ditch and slowly walked in front of me. I was so lucky to get around him by inches. No way to stop in time and he didn't jump. Would have really been a mess and that hog would have probably just snorted and walked off. I know he was well over 600lbs.
