Snow Fox, my apologies...on occasion my rude attempts at humor offend people.... many years ago, I had a tee shirt that said Mustang Ranch Riding Instructor......intended for my equally rude foursome......well....the Middle School boy wore it to school .....;that got both of us an invite to the Principals Office for a lesson in appropriate attire......that included the boy hitching up his pants......
No offense taken, fren!!❤

Luv it Placer....if I was to do it again, with no one to consider but myself and the dog.....I would do just that....buy raw land acreage and build a 40X60 insulated metal pole building with 14' doors and clearance..... with radiant heat concrete floors and exposed plumbing and electrical fixtures with a 700 sq ft loft apartment with a master bed and bath at one side and a guest bedroom with 2 bunk beds and locker room type bath for the kids to visit at the other side.....they are all boys......

With a 50' grass defensible space.....on a private gated road.....Vallhalla ....where the defeated can rest...

Love this thread and the opinions on it...meaning I probably should stay off of it, since my "2 Cents", if I gave them might get it locked 😁 ...

But suffice to say, growing up in Florida, back in the 1950s and early 60s when it had 3 to 5 million instead of 25 million people, the Gulf life and weather were great, but now? As much as I like the current Governor, the Sunshine State is just to damn crowded, and to hot and wet from May through mid October...Ohio, rural Ohio, while at times boring and flat as heck, is a rock solid 2nd Amendment and Free Speech state, especially if you stay out of Cleveland, Dayton, Toledo, and Northeast Berg parts of the state...the weather on the other hand? Well it pretty much sucks about 300 days a year, to cold, to wet, to humid, to hot, to much lousy riding weather...

The perfect solution would seem to live in Florida from November to May and Ohio the rest of the year...but even with the funds and retirement enjoyed by wife and Hoot, that isn't happening...nearing 74 {March 16th} with Grandsons, Pets, and much of the family and friends in Ohio...I will stay here and visit Florida a time or two a year for my photography, and fishing trips...and bitch about the winter weather and heat and humidity in July here in the Buckeye State...

However, if I was on my own with no wife or family, I would probably end up in or around Terlingua, Texas...right on the door step of Big Bend National and State Parks, it seems to be a perfect place for people that just want to get away from everything and most everybody...and the riding is great and the weather, for the most part, Hot, real hot, in the Summer, and mild in the winters...

Reading this thread is kind of fun to me since I went through the same situation just 7-8 years ago.
A few places I considered and tested.

St, George UT. Not a mormy, so tough to fit in.
Page AZ. I love Lake Powell like no where else on the planet. But - its only Lake Powell.
Prescott AZ - tried it - Nopers, not a chance.Sold it.
Happy Jack AZ - bought land - it's for sale.
Reno, Gardnerville area. - Nope for me.
Even Mesquite NV - Holy Hell is it fricki'n hot there! - and I thought AZ was HOT. -So No way.
Santa FE NM. Nopers for me.
Cheyenne WY - WInd is the weather of the day, just how windy it will be! I'm not kidding - WIND!
Casper WY -why does anyone even live there? That is the middle of nowhere - now where you want to be.
Lusk WY - Now that is a pretty neat little town. = Little, really little, and really isolated. - But Cool.
Somewhere between Cheyenne & Lusk WY -- Yeah, maybe if the right thing showed up! I like WY's style ! it's like Rapid City area without the - want to grow thing!

So I went home to RC SD. First choice for me was Spearfish SD - Love it. But we bought in the Black Hills instead. The problem is RC wants to grow, they want to be ALL BIG CITY..... of course, no one puts two and two together on why everything is going to crap. Taxes have gone up, crime which was near non-existent has increased, and driving styles have changed - people are not what they were just a few years ago....... Gee, you think it might be the monster influx of CA, WA, OR people.... ? No, that can't be it....
I started here - I'll finish here. BUT, I am always on the look for a place outside of Rapid - lie Ms. Fox has found.
This is incredible country, and incredible South Dakotans that live here are unbelievable. The influx of the others screwing it up - POS, most of them.
So there again is my 2 cents. And that is about all it's probably worth to most....

I'm actually looking at Terlingua for a winter getaway. Aren't there problems with, how shall I say without getting banned..undocumented people and crime?

Terlingua is a mining district and census-designated place in southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Wikipedia

"located near the Rio Grande" That pretty much answered your question... Now Ms. Fox, if you are looking into becoming a border patrol agent - that is the spot to get hired the day you want to show up.

I have some friends I actually shared an RV space with for 3 years in Payson AZ (northern AZ cowboy tourist town) and we get along great they are home bodies and I travel all the time so we worked out great and didn't trip over each other too much lol - PS they lived in Happy Jack AZ for the last year in AZ and only the bad fires that year chased them away to Florida

I've known then 35 years

So they "think" Florida" is the answer these days they are back up in Washington State (we refer to WA aka the penitentiary) they went to Florida late September 2018 and stayed about 4 months all the time ranting and raving how wonderful it was albeit raining 9 out of 10 days but they said they liked the warm rain. For some reason after 4 months they call and were half way back to Seattle in a uhaul I still don't know why something medical I think lol

Now they want to move back to (ShawShank) Florida and they want me to go in on property and a shop but I have friends in Daytona who lived there all their life and are happy but they even warn me the humidity is terrible and that there is in fact "bug month" aka "bug season" which I have heard of

AZ has it's share of bugs and grasshopper season in Prescott is crazy they are like small chickens w/o the cluck or the eggs

My friends are deluded into thinking Florida is always pleasant and not too hot and humid and urged them to rent a place for 6 months during the hot season before they rent more uhauls

Hoot's post got me thinking about this again because my friends want to make the move next month

I rented spots in AZ during July and august before I made the move (from Seattle) in 2008 I found the heat nice after 40 years of Seattle rain - I still keep a small warehouse in western WA for sporadic visits

we are all 2A folks and AZ is not as 2A friendly as many believe so thats part of the appeal but as I recall Florida does not have constitutional carry "yet"

Any opinions from people with Florida experience I'll pass on to my friends

they stayed in Palatka and had a great living deal at a shipyard with some wealthy folks who took a shine to them so that also helps but I think Palatka is too remote for me and my sales I think I need to be near the Coast and up close to Georgia myself

I'll still keep a base in AZ I love the desert and have no plans to ever divorce my scorched earth state lol

Bummer, because it looks like an amazing place to explore. Not sure it would be a safe place for a single woman, given the....uh... geography.

Man I hear ya. I grew up in Orange County, California, and now I live in Connecticut and work at JFK airport - outside. Next year will be 25 years, and I just cant take the freezing temps anymore, fixing airplanes all night long. I've been looking at Zillow for a nice piece of land out west, specifically to keep my TW's and maybe a dune buggie. I figure I can rent out my house and retire. I don't think my girlfriend is onboard with this idea, though.

I was in New Mexico a couple of years ago. I took a leave of absence from my airline job to avoid a pandemic related layoff. I worked for Virgin Galactic out at the Spaceport. I bought a 20 year old fixer upper trailer in TorC, and that was home for about a year, living in an RV lot. I sold that trailer and moved into a local motel for $450 per month. It was great hanging out with the long-term retired folks living there. I bought my TW there for a back up vehicle. I rode my TW to work a few times, but way too many wild animals out at night at 3am. I would hit large Jack Rabbits nightly in my van (pic below). Also, you need 4wd there if you take the county roads.

Even though that area was economically depressed (compared to other areas of NM), the people there are super friendly. I was mostly around senior citizens. Lots of Vietnam Vets & the like. I was making daily beer runs for them before work. The Walmart there is awesome... 32 cent burritos.

Anyhow, it does get pretty cold in New Mexico due to it's altitude (the entire state is fairly elevated). I would drive to my dads in CA about once a month, and it was so nice to go through Tucson & Phoenix and warm up (Dec-Feb).

Agree. I turned off my cable 5 years ago when my son went to college. You miss the background noise for a little while, but it's so nice not being flooded with BS anymore. You guys are my TV now :ROFLMAO:
I like the stance of your Syncro . I'm interested in your set up... Any rubbing issues when articulating ? Do you know the size / backspace of that wheel tire combo ?

I did mineral research in the Terlingua region, the Park and south of the border there decades past. Very nice locals once away from town and tourists and once you break the ice. Texas hospitality is legendary. Where else could you roll up to a ranch and get a split rim flat tire repaired for free with a home cooked meal thrown in just in exchange for some fresh conversation? Of course they have internet and satellite sources for entertaiment beyond what a scruffy stranger can provide these days. Things change. Still it was, and still is, a long ways from anywhere, and an even farther journey to change the flavor from the general feel of the northern Sonoran desert. Give me the occasional leafy tree, clear flowing water or mountain lake within a day's journey to keep me happy.

I have a place in Mesa. When i retired in 2007 i moved to Prescott. I didn't mind it but my wife hated it. Traffic is insane these days.
I spend 7-8 months of the year in Alaska as i can't stand the heat. Currently looking for a new place, candidates are Payson a n d Southern Utah. Until then, i will keep commuting to Alaska. I'm sitting at gate in Phoenix as i type this headed to Kodiak...

IMO that portion of the Rio Grande is well guarded and if they jump the border {a long swim} there really isn't much around...Terlingua, in my view, is mostly crusty old loners and Vietnam Vets that just want to be left alone...lots of drinking goes on, and I'm sure other "Pleasures", but the place, despite it reputation, seems pretty safe to me...Montezuma and Hoot stay here, when not camping at the Rio Grande Village in the US Park:

Thanks :) Do you have a Syncro? I'm going to send you a PM as the modifications are extensive, and I don't want to derail this thread.

You guys with your ultimate spots keep making me change my mind on my future move. I've lived all over the US, and I pretty much liked at least one town everywhere: TX, ID, OH, VA, SC, FL, AZ, NM, CT, NY, NV, WA, IL, OR, CA. I should also note that the perfect house for me is a massive garage or barn (or even an old warehouse somewhere) with a loft above it where I sleep. The kitchen (or where my coffee is) would be downstairs, where I can gaze over projects I'm working on, and ones I have yet started. This is due to my addiction of vehicles and vintage machines. Here's a few of my projects (not counting my VWs & motorcycles)

The H.A.M.B.

I think I'm going to narrow down my search on what Placerlode said about the water well requirement. This would be for a semi-off grid cabin or barn.

This looks interesting.

We have a place here in Highlands County Florida and another in Riceville Tennessee. Yes it is hot in the summer and the love bugs are a pain but the winter time is very nice. Also in about two or three hours we can be on either coast or head north to the hills of Ocala. East Tennessee offers everything I want in outdoor adventure and the medical care is very good with Knoxville about fifty miles away. Also the cost of living is low in both places and land values are coming back down. Gun laws are pretty lax and folks in both places are very nice and look out for each other.

The Knoxville area is stunning. Wish I had bought property there before prices got cray cray...at least in my price range.
