After installing new tires and a 47t rear sprocket to make my TW more on-road friendly, I went and done (didded?) this:

BTW, n+1 comes from a bicycling website. Rule 12 seems to apply to motorcycles as well: "While the minimum number of bikes one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bikes currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of bikes owned that would result in separation from your partner."

Nice looking bike. After selling a v Strom and a KLR in the past 2 years, the cb500x is definitely on my radar. I'm hoping to find a used one next year if the prices have returned to a sane level.
How is the power delivery? As expected for a 500 cc twin?

That's where I put my helmet.

With little experience with other bikes, I'm not the best to ask. It certainly got up and moved, much better than the TW. Even 100 pounds heavier, it handled more nimbly, probably due to lighter wheels. just picked it up yesterday, and the three and a half hour drive home from the dealer(!) was half in the dark, and I kept my speed fairly slow due to the deer threat.

It's been proven that you need at least six motorcycles to be happy. Only two more to go!!!!

I love this high tech bike. Key on, and a sultry female voice sounds: "You seem to have gained another five lbs this week. Shall I dial up the preload?"

A little tidbit for you, Sir:
"...and the three and a half hour drive home..."
You drive cattle & automobiles.
You ride horses & motorcycles.
It's a fact! You can look it up...
Well, my wife drove home... :giggle:

Tuesday was warm enough to ride the CB500X 15 miles to the storage locker for the winter. Topped up the tank with ethanol-free gas & stabilizer along the way. Sigh.

Here's a few pics from this fall's camping trip:

While Mr Putter hides in the background, X luggage is fitted: Shad pannier racks, cheap Rockbros panniers, Osah duffel, Nelson Rigg tank bag.

Thanks to flavor-of-the-day health directives, restaurant dining rooms were closed, leaving only drive-thru lanes open. Nice 50°, gusty picnic.

I have an NC700X, which is an alternative to the CB500X.

The downsides are much the same. Maintenance and required infrastructure. Meaning, radiator; inaccessable components....plus, of course, the buedcket-shim valve adjustments. After all the decorative cladding is removed.

My NC will be sold when maintenance costs rise to where they will be. Meantime, it runs well, so I will keep it in the fleet for awhile.

But to me, the New Normal, favors bikes like the TW.

Valve adj. is at 16,000 miles. I've read a detailed procedure, and I may have a shop do it for me.

I didn't want to chance the fit of universal handguards on the X's tapered bars. Barkbusters has a made-to-fit set, but they've been out of stock for months. They arrived two weeks after the bike was stored. I don't have easy access (have to call storage mgr to meet me there), so they're partially assembled, waiting until more parts come in to make it worth the trip.

I finally got the X all farkled up. It's in an unheated storage building, and it's been cold here. Inside temp read 22°f, so the first chore was to plug in an electric space heater. Through 5 hours the single car garage-sized room only got to 35°. Frosty!

Lowering footpegs drop up to 40mm. Somewhere between $25 Made in Hurry and $250 Veblen Goods, I'll see if the extension is up to the task. OEM pegs will be with me in Moab just in case.

Barkbusters were next, and removing the factory handlebar weights was the only time I rode the struggle bus, especially the left hand one. Peel the (frozen) grip back, then simultaneously press two release clips while pulling the weight out. Seems to need about two more hands than I possess. Once removed, the install presented no further issues.

Mirror extensions. Because I'm tired of seeing only shoulders in them.

The Rally Raid engine guard rounded up the afternoon. Attaching to the forward engine-frame mounts, one side sprung out of alignment enough to thwart reinstallation of the mounting bolt.

The instructions suggest a ratchet strap. Worked:

There is a front plate that protects the oil filter and lower front of the sump. Meant to be removable, it has to be added after attaching the main guard frame, but starting the screws should have been done before. All in all though, straight forward and not nearly as annoying as the handlebar weights.

3 weeks until Moab, and the X is on jackstands! No, I didn't park it overnight in Detroit, I retrieved the wheels this weekend. Tires arrive sometime this week, and after the shop mounts & balances, they'll be going right back on next weekend.

The only thing remaining to do is install a radiator guard, front fender extension (if it arrives on time), and drop in the battery right before leaving.

Tires are Shinko 804/805 Big Blocks:

I didn't take any shots of the wheel removal, so here's Henry getting his first taste of (spring?) outdoors.

Tires mounted. While waiting at the shop, I managed to find a buyer for Mr. Putter. I'll miss the TW, but it's going to a good home.

Hope they look as good when the wheels are back on.

I tend to name my vehicles, though I wait until I get to know them before it comes to me. The TW, Mr. Putter, struck me as masculine. Don't know whether the X is male or female yet. I'll have to get another thousand clicks or so on it.

The Domestic Associate suggested Jolene. "I'm begging of you please don't take my man."

Had a set of those tires on my KLR. They worked pretty well in the Tennessee rocks and dirt and were very nice on the pavement. That was a good surprise. However they wore out very fast to the point of replacement in less than 3k miles. If your riding mostly in the dirt then no problem but if its mostly pavement there are better choices.
